GTA 6 crews and playing with friends: what we know

GTA 6 has no announced multiplayer, and Social Club is gone. What that means for crews, and how the system worked in GTA Online

Updated September 3, 2026 · 7 min read · 8 sources

Crews are one of the most-asked questions about Grand Theft Auto VI and one of the least answerable. There is no announced multiplayer mode, so there is nothing for a crew to exist inside. Take-Two describes the game as a single-player experience and the PlayStation Store listing shows one player and offline play.12

The complication nobody mentions

Even if a crew system arrives later, the infrastructure that ran the old one is gone. Crews in GTA Online were created and managed through the Rockstar Games Social Club website, and that site was taken offline in July 2025, with its URL redirecting to Rockstar's main site. Profiles, walls and shared media went with it.34

No replacement platform has been announced. That means any future crew system would need new plumbing, which is a plausible reason the old site was retired ahead of a new game, though Rockstar has not said so.34

How crews worked in GTA Online

For context, and as history rather than a preview: crews were persistent player groups with their own emblem and a rank structure running from leader down through officer tiers to general members. Player-created crews could hold up to 1,000 members, while crews created by Rockstar had no cap. Crew membership fed into reputation bonuses and shared identity in lobbies.5

Players could belong to several crews at once but could only lead one. Crews were also the social layer that made long-term GTA Online communities work, which is why their absence from the GTA VI conversation is so noticeable.5

Not yet confirmed: whether GTA 6 will have crews, friends lists, party systems, cooperative play or any online social layer at all. None of it has been announced.

What you can actually do with friends at launch

  • Play your own copies in parallel and compare progress, which is how single-player Rockstar launches have always worked.1
  • Use your platform's own party chat and share features, which are unaffected by anything Rockstar has or has not announced.1
  • Keep playing GTA Online together, which Take-Two says it expects to keep supporting.6

What would signal a change

The first credible sign of a crew system returning would be Rockstar announcing an online mode at all, followed by an account or social platform to replace what Social Club used to do. Neither has happened. Until then, any crew recruitment post for GTA VI is recruiting for something that does not exist.23

Why the question is louder this time

For most people playing Grand Theft Auto today, the game is a social space first and a story second. Over a decade of GTA Online turned crews, lobbies and shared sessions into the default way the series is experienced, so a launch with no announced social layer feels like a subtraction rather than a return to normal.56

Historically it is the opposite. Every Grand Theft Auto before V launched as a single-player game, and V's own online component arrived after release rather than with it. What is happening now is closer to the series norm than the last decade has been.56

What we would need to see

Three things, in order, would make crew talk meaningful again: an announced online mode for GTA VI, an account or social platform to replace what Social Club handled, and then a crew system built on top of it. None of the three has been announced, and the second was actively retired in 2025.234

What is confirmed versus what is precedent

Confirmed: no multiplayer mode, and therefore no crew system, exists for GTA VI today.12 Precedent: crews were never part of Grand Theft Auto V on its own release day either. GTA Online, and the crew system inside it, launched on 1 October 2013, two weeks after the story mode.7 The idea that a numbered GTA ships with its social layer built in is actually the exception in this series' history, not the rule.

GTA Online history that matters here

Crews turned out to matter more than a launch-day feature ever could have. Over more than a decade, they became one of the load-bearing pieces of GTA Online's retention, giving players a persistent group identity across thousands of individual sessions, which is part of why GTA Online is still named among Take-Two's largest net bookings contributors in its fiscal 2026 results.8 That is the real argument for why crews, or something like them, are likely to matter again if GTA VI ever gets an online mode: not because Rockstar owes players the feature, but because the feature demonstrably worked.

Mistakes people make

  • Assuming a launch-day social layer is the series norm. GTA Online itself proves otherwise.7
  • Recruiting for a GTA VI crew now. There is nothing to recruit players into yet.12
  • Believing a leaked or fan-made 'crew beta' is real. No crew system, beta or otherwise, has been announced.12
  • Underestimating how much infrastructure a crew system needs, given that the old one depended entirely on the now-retired Social Club website.34

What would change this page

The sequence that would make crew talk meaningful is specific: an announced GTA VI online mode, a replacement for the account and social platform Social Club used to provide, and then a crew system on top of both. Any one of those three appearing would be reason to revisit this page.234

Related questions answered

If crews return, would they look like the old GTA Online system? There is no way to know, but the underlying reason to expect something similar is the same reason GTA Online kept crews for its entire run: persistent group identity measurably keeps players engaged, and that pattern is reflected in GTA Online's continued status as a top net bookings contributor over a decade later.8 Why did GTA Online launch without crews included in GTA V's own release? Rockstar built GTA Online as a genuinely separate, later-arriving product, and crews were part of that separate product from the start, not a story-mode feature.7

Frequently asked questions

Will GTA 6 have crews?

Not announced. There is no announced multiplayer mode for GTA 6 for crews to exist in.12

Can I play GTA 6 with friends?

No cooperative or multiplayer mode has been announced. The store listing shows a single-player, offline-capable game.1

Why can't I manage my crew any more?

Crew management ran through the Social Club website, which was taken offline in July 2025. No replacement has been announced.34

How big were GTA Online crews?

Player-created crews could hold up to 1,000 members, and Rockstar-created crews had no limit.5

Did GTA V launch with crews built in?

No. Crews arrived with GTA Online, which launched on 1 October 2013, two weeks after GTA V's story mode.7

Is a social layer like crews commercially important to Rockstar?

The evidence suggests yes: GTA Online, which crews helped sustain, remains a top net bookings contributor for Take-Two more than a decade after launch.8

Should I join a 'GTA 6 crew' recruiting post I found online?

No. There is no multiplayer mode for GTA 6 to have crews in, so any such recruitment is for something that does not exist yet.12
