Ocean Beach in GTA 6: the art deco strip and the real Ocean Drive behind it
Vice City's pastel beachfront: art deco hotels, white sand, the Ocean View Hotel and the real Miami Beach buildings Rockstar copied.
Ocean Beach is the beachfront strip of Vice City and the single most recognisable piece of GTA 6's map. Rockstar names it first when describing the city, crediting it with pastel art deco hotels and bright white sands, and it is the district the whole Vice City aesthetic is built on1. GamesRadar describes it as one of the neighbourhoods returning players will recognise immediately from the 2002 game2.
What the official site says
On rockstargames.com/VI, Ocean Beach opens Rockstar's tour of the city's neighbourhoods, alongside Little Cuba, the Tisha-Wocka flea market and the VC Port1. It also turns up in the game's pre-order copy: the Vintage Vice City Pack bundles a two-tone '55 Vapid Stanier and a garage beside what Rockstar calls the world-famous Ocean Beach, and the pack's screenshots are captioned as showing Jason and Lucia outside the Ocean View Hotel6. That hotel name is a direct callback, and PC Gamer flags early Vice City clips as harking back to the original game's Ocean View Hotel3.
What the trailers show
Trailer 1 already contained shots that reporters read as updated versions of the 2002 game's Ocean Beach area, alongside what looked like Starfish Island, and road signs pointing to Vice Beaches4. The footage established the district's palette immediately: pastel by day, neon after dark, palm trees, convertibles and crowded pavement42.
The real Ocean Drive
Miami New Times went through the reveal footage with local knowledge and matched about 20 real South Florida buildings to their in-game copies. Two Ocean Drive hotels were renamed rather than redesigned: the Hotel Breakwater becomes Hotel Boardwalk in Vice City, and the Hotel Victor becomes Hotel Dixon, both keeping their neon art deco detailing. The paper also identified Loews Miami Beach Hotel, the Hilton Bentley in South of Fifth, the Hilton McAlpin Ocean Plaza and 1500 Ocean Drive among the recreated buildings5.
What we still do not know
Rockstar has not published a map, so Ocean Beach's boundaries, its length and how it connects to the rest of Vice City are all unconfirmed3. We also do not know which of its hotels and clubs are enterable. The Vintage Vice City Pack garage is the only Ocean Beach property Rockstar has explicitly attached to the player so far6.
Real-world inspiration in detail
Miami New Times' building-by-building comparison is most concentrated right along Ocean Drive, which is the strip Ocean Beach is built on. Beyond the two renamed hotels, the paper matched 1500 Ocean Drive Condos at 940 Ocean Dr for its pastel art deco facade, the Loews Miami Beach Hotel at 1601 Collins Ave for its oceanfront grandeur, the Hilton McAlpin Ocean Plaza at 1430 Ocean Dr for its retro colour scheme, and the Hilton Bentley Hotel at 101 Ocean Dr, in the South of Fifth neighbourhood at the strip's southern tip5. One detail stood out to the paper as a joke rather than a straight copy: an airplane banner ad for a fictional Vice City club called Nine1Nine flying over the beach, which reads as a nod to the real Miami club E11even and its own well-known aerial banner ads5.
How it compares to Vice City (2002)
Ocean Beach was the first island players could freely explore in the 2002 game, and Rockstar's choice to open its modern Vice City description with the same district signals it is keeping that role. The returning Ocean View Hotel name is the clearest link, and GamesRadar's read on the trailers notes shots that look like updated versions of the original Ocean Beach and the neighbouring Starfish Island24. What has changed is the level of real-world specificity: the 2002 game invented an art deco skyline in the general shape of South Beach, while Miami New Times' comparison shows GTA 6 copying individual named buildings and, in the case of the Breakwater and Victor hotels, renaming them rather than reinventing them5.
Gameplay hints
The Vintage Vice City Pack pairs its Ocean Beach garage with a '55 Vapid Stanier sedan and a period-specific weapon pattern, which frames the district as a place Rockstar expects players to return to for its nostalgia value as much as its geography6. GamesRadar's coverage of the Extended Look separately noted that Vice City's nightclubs render small simulation touches, such as characters visibly sweating while dancing, and that the surrounding ocean is dense with manatees, dolphins and stingrays, both of which point to Ocean Beach's shoreline and nightlife being built as lived-in space rather than a backdrop2.
Rockstar's own screenshot captions add texture Miami New Times' building matches do not cover: a lifeguard stand scene with sunbathers, joggers and a couple walking hand in hand, and a wider shot of roads, palm trees and a basketball court running back from the sand toward the rest of the city1. Those images place ordinary daytime beach life alongside the strip's nightlife identity, which fits how GamesRadar frames the district, as somewhere returning players will recognise instantly rather than a purely nocturnal set piece12.
What is still unknown
Rockstar has not said whether the renamed hotels are enterable, whether Nine1Nine is a real venue players can visit, or how far Ocean Beach extends before it becomes Washington Beach or Little Cuba. No map has been published to answer any of it35.
