Jason Duval: everything we know about GTA 6's male protagonist

Jason Duval is one of the two playable leads in Grand Theft Auto VI, alongside Lucia Caminos. Rockstar's own profile paints him as a man who would like a quiet life and keeps failing to get one: he was raised around grifters and small-time crooks, did a stint in the Army to put a troubled adolescence behind him, and ended up back where he started, running errands for drug crews in the Leonida Keys.¹

What the official site says about him

The Only in Leonida profile frames Jason as someone who is good at the work but tired of it, and openly floats the idea that he might try something else. It also makes his link to the other protagonist the hinge of his story: meeting Lucia, Rockstar writes, could turn out to be either the best or the worst thing that has happened to him, and even Jason cannot tell which way it will fall.¹

The same page ties him to two of the supporting cast. Brian Heder, a veteran smuggler in the Keys, lets Jason stay at one of his properties without paying rent, on the understanding that Jason helps out with local shakedowns and shows up occasionally for a drink with Brian's wife Lori. Cal Hampton is described as Jason's friend and a fellow associate of Brian's, which places all three men inside the same small-time Keys network at the start of the game.¹

What the trailers and the Extended Look show

Jason appeared in the first trailer on December 4, 2023, in the robbery and car-chase footage that established the pair as a Bonnie-and-Clyde act. Trailer 2, released May 6, 2025, gave him far more screen time, and PC Gamer notes that it is Jason who picks Lucia up after she gets out of prison. Rockstar's own site lists Trailer 1 at 1:31 and Trailer 2 at 2:47.³⁴⁹⁷²

The 26-minute Extended Look, captured on a PlayStation 5 and shown on August 27, 2026, is where Jason finally looks like a playable character rather than a face in a montage. It opens with him and Lucia collecting a package for the Vice City fixer Boobie Ike, a job that turns into a police raid and a running gunfight through cramped corridors before they escape in an elevator. Along the way Jason stops to pet a stray dog and the game flashes a small angel icon, which reads as a morality or relationship counter running in the background.⁵⁶

Later sequences show him meeting Brian at a party, smoking a cigar with him through what appears to be a proper in-game smoking mechanic, then auditioning for the bank robber Raul Bautista with Lucia driving and Jason firing a rifle out of the car during a helicopter chase. In the Megamundo mission he swaps robbery clothes for formalwear as private security, and uses a slow-motion ability to line up a string of headshots, a power that reads as his equivalent of the character-specific abilities in Grand Theft Auto V.⁵⁶

His relationship with Lucia is a system, not a cutscene

The most important thing the Extended Look changed is that Jason and Lucia's romance is not fixed. Reporting around the showcase says the couple want to be together when the story starts, but whether that holds depends on how the player behaves: spending time together in the open world builds the bond, and there is no mechanical bonus for keeping it, only different narrative outcomes later. They still work missions side by side either way. HotHardware also notes that the footage suggests you may be able to switch between the two of them inside a mission rather than only between them.⁵⁶

Rockstar's own bio material backs that reading up. A second, shorter card on the official character page pairs a line from Jason promising to have Lucia's back if anything goes wrong with a wry aside about another day in paradise, sitting right next to the passage about not knowing whether meeting her will be the best or worst thing that ever happened to him. Read together, the site is deliberately withholding a verdict on the two of them rather than selling a straightforward romance.¹

Comparison with GTA 5's protagonists

Grand Theft Auto V ran on three separate leads, Michael, Franklin and Trevor, who mostly lived in different parts of Los Santos and crossed paths for specific missions and heists. Game Rant's comparison piece argues GTA 6 is doing something structurally different with fewer characters: Jason and Lucia are written to share scenes rather than take turns, so the partner not being controlled still fights, drives and reacts rather than standing idle, and switching between them can happen mid-mission instead of only on the map. The site frames it as trading GTA V's parallel-lives structure for a single shared story.¹⁰

That also reshapes Jason's own arc. Michael, Franklin and Trevor each had a mostly separate personal story; Jason's is defined almost entirely by his bond with Lucia and by the string of increasingly dangerous men, Brian, Raul, Boobie, pulling him from the quiet life his bio says he wants.¹⁵

Voice and performance: what is and is not confirmed

Rockstar has never named a cast for GTA 6. Dylan Rourke is the name that circulates because a résumé or IMDb-style credit under that name lists motion-capture work matching the timing of the project, but as Vice points out, those pages can be edited by anyone, so it proves nothing on its own.⁸

What does exist is a real split over the performance in the footage aired so far. Vice describes some viewers calling Jason's delivery flat, and others defending it as a callback to Don Johnson's laid-back Miami Vice cadence. The article's own caveat matters most: everyone is judging a few edited minutes, not a finished performance.⁸

Community theories

The most discussed fan theory about Jason holds that he is secretly working as a police officer while embedded with Lucia and the Keys crews. Screen Rant lays out the trailer evidence fans cite: Jason wearing what one former-law-enforcement commentator identifies as battle-dress-uniform pants rather than ordinary cargo pants, and a shooting style in some Lucia-focused shots that resembles bodycam footage rather than standard trailer cinematography. It is an entertaining read of the marketing, not a leak or a confirmed plot point, and Rockstar has said nothing to support or deny it. Treat it as speculation only.¹¹

What is still unknown

Rockstar has not credited a voice actor for Jason. Fans have long pointed at Dylan Rourke on the strength of an IMDb credit, but IMDb pages can be edited by anyone and Rockstar has confirmed nothing, so treat that name as an unconfirmed rumour. His exact age, his rank or unit in the Army, how long he has been in the Keys, and whether the story lets him actually walk away are all still blank.⁸¹
