Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 1 is the moment the game stopped being a rumour. The 91-second clip went live on Rockstar's YouTube channel on the evening of December 4, 2023, a day earlier than planned, and it confirmed the title, the setting and a 2025 release window on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.13

Why Trailer 1 arrived a day early

Rockstar had announced the premiere for 9:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, with a countdown overlay on its own website.6 Less than a day before that slot, clips of the trailer began circulating on TikTok and X, roughly 13 to 15 hours ahead of schedule, and Rockstar pulled the release forward rather than let a leaked rip set the tone.9 YouTube's own metadata puts the upload at roughly 6:07 p.m. ET on December 4.37 The Newswire post went up the next morning at the originally scheduled time anyway.27

Rockstar's social accounts pointed viewers to the official upload once it was live rather than address the leak at length, and the studio has since used similar language, calling it heartbreaking when unfinished Grand Theft Auto VI material leaks outside its control, a line it repeated after footage leaked ahead of the 2026 Extended Look as well.12

What Trailer 1 actually confirmed

  • The game is called Grand Theft Auto VI and is set in the state of Leonida, with Vice City at its centre.2
  • It was announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a 2025 window.1
  • Lucia is shown as a playable lead. Her surname, Caminos, was not given until Trailer 2.4
  • The soundtrack is Love Is a Long Road by Tom Petty, credited in Rockstar's own video description.3
  • Rockstar founder Sam Houser framed the game as a push at what is possible in story-driven open-world games, and Take-Two's release placed it behind a Grand Theft Auto V total above 190 million units sold and a Red Dead Redemption 2 total above 81 million.1

That 2025 window did not hold. Rockstar later moved the game to May 26, 2026, and then to November 19, 2026, which is the date that stands today.8

How the trailer is structured, act by act

The cut runs in three movements, and each one does a distinct job. Rockstar had almost two years of near-silence to answer for, and Trailer 1 spends its 91 seconds answering three different questions in sequence: who is this, where is this, and what does this feel like to live in.4

Act one: the prison interview (0:00-0:11)

The trailer opens cold on the Leonida Penitentiary, where Lucia is questioned by a corrections social worker named Stefanie and answers that she is there because of bad luck. There is no music cue until the freeway shot that follows, and no location name on screen, so the first eleven seconds exist purely to introduce a person rather than a place.4

Act two: the state montage (0:11-0:45)

From the Rockstar Games Presents card onward, the trailer becomes a tourist-brochure sweep of the state: Vice Beach, the downtown skyline, the Grassrivers wetlands, the Keys, the port and the car culture of the inland neighbourhoods. This is the section doing the heaviest lifting for Leonida as a setting, moving through roughly a dozen distinct locations in under thirty-five seconds.4

Act three: the crime spree (0:45-1:18)

The last third turns into a run of user-filmed clips and news-style footage, alligators, street takeovers, a naked man being chased by a sheriff's deputy, before landing on Lucia and Jason together, first in a motel room and then holding up a liquor store. Only in these final shots does the trailer confirm a second protagonist and a criminal partnership, saving its biggest reveal for the very end.4

Who and what the trailer identifies

The GTA Wiki's frame-by-frame transcript counts 46 distinct shots, including seven that mirror real Florida news stories, from an alligator walking into a store to a naked man being chased past a gas station. Rockstar shoots most of these as phone video, body-cam or helicopter news feeds, complete with on-screen usernames, so the state introduces itself the way a viewer would actually encounter it rather than through a traditional flyover.4

  • Characters: Lucia (surname not yet given), the corrections social worker Stefanie, Jason (seen but not named on screen), and the Real Dimez duo filmed dancing during the Crosstown street takeover.4
  • Locations: the Leonida Penitentiary, Vice Beach, downtown Vice City, the Grassrivers wetlands, the Leonida Keys, the Vice City port, Interstate 404, the Stockyard and Hamlet neighbourhoods, Waning Sands, La Perle, Port Gellhorn and the Starlet Motel.4
  • Vehicles: a red supercar, an airboat, jet skis, a catamaran, monster trucks and swamp buggies at the Thrillbilly Mud Club, and a beat-up sedan Lucia and Jason drive past responding sheriff units.4

Where Trailer 1 sits in the timeline

Rockstar had confirmed that a new Grand Theft Auto was in active development in a Newswire community update on February 4, 2022, then said nothing concrete for almost two years.7 The 25th anniversary message in November 2023 promised a first trailer in early December, and the December 1 post fixed the slot.67 So Trailer 1 is only the second official communication about the game in almost two years, which is part of why it hit as hard as it did.

The records it set

Guinness World Records logged 90,421,491 views in the first 24 hours, making it the most-viewed video game trailer on YouTube in a day, the most-liked video game trailer with 8.9 million likes in that window, and the most-viewed non-music YouTube video in 24 hours, beating MrBeast's previous mark of 59.4 million.5 Sam Houser's comment once the record was confirmed was that Rockstar was thrilled to share its new vision with players everywhere.5 The upload has since passed 294 million views.3

Trailer 1 vs Trailer 2 vs the Extended Look

Trailer 1 sold a place through found footage without naming its second lead. Trailer 2, at 2 minutes 47 seconds, replaced that approach with two named, tracked characters and the first footage Rockstar was willing to call gameplay. The Extended Look went further still: a roughly 26-to-27-minute showcase, premiered on Netflix in August 2026, built from sustained gameplay sequences rather than short cuts.1011

Measured purely by scale, each reveal has been longer and more explicit than the last: 91 seconds of mood, then 167 seconds of character, then over 1,500 seconds of systems and mechanics. Trailer 1 remains the only one of the three built almost entirely from non-player footage, styled as found media rather than as anything resembling gameplay capture.410

What Trailer 1 does not tell you

Not yet confirmed in Trailer 1: no mission names, no gameplay HUD, no character surnames and no confirmation of which shots are gameplay rather than cutscene. Rockstar did not label the footage the way it later labelled Trailer 2, and it never claimed the footage was captured on any specific hardware, unlike Trailer 2 and the Extended Look, both of which Rockstar explicitly said were captured on PlayStation 5. We will update this page if Rockstar publishes more detail.

Names for the supporting cast, Jason's surname and the confirmation that footage was captured on a PlayStation 5 all had to wait until the second trailer and the official site relaunch in May 2025.4

Production facts Rockstar has and hasn't confirmed

Rockstar's own video description for Trailer 1 credits Love Is a Long Road by Tom Petty as the music and names no other crew, cast or production detail beyond that.3 That is a notably thin credit list next to Trailer 2, whose description named five songs, or the Extended Look, whose Newswire rollout came with a capture-platform statement and a synopsis. Trailer 1's marketing text is, by comparison, almost entirely just the footage itself.2310

What can be inferred rather than confirmed: the trailer was cut together well before its December 2023 release, since Rockstar had booked a specific premiere slot more than a week in advance, and the countdown page and the fixed December 5 time both point to a trailer that was finished and scheduled, not rushed out in response to the leak. The leak changed the release time by under a day; it did not change the content.369
