Which Rockstar studios are making GTA 6?
Rockstar North leads development from Edinburgh, but the company lists thirteen studios worldwide. Here is what is confirmed and what is not.
Grand Theft Auto VI is developed and published by Rockstar Games, which is a label of Take-Two Interactive. Rockstar does not break out per-project staffing, so the honest answer to "which studios" is assembled from two things: who speaks for the game, and which studios Rockstar publicly operates.41
Rockstar North leads
Every developer who has spoken publicly about Grand Theft Auto VI carries a Rockstar North title. Rob Nelson, the studio's co-head and Rockstar's head of development, gave the interviews and studio demos around the August 2026 Extended Look and answered the direct questions on monetisation, generative AI and world scale. Rockstar North is based in Edinburgh and has led every mainline Grand Theft Auto.236
The studios Rockstar actually lists
Rockstar's own careers site names thirteen locations: Rockstar Australia in Sydney, Rockstar Dundee, Rockstar India in Bengaluru, Rockstar International, Rockstar LA, Rockstar Leeds, Rockstar Lincoln, Rockstar London, Rockstar New England in Andover, Rockstar New York, Rockstar North in Edinburgh, Rockstar San Diego in Carlsbad and Rockstar Toronto in Oakville.1
The company describes itself on that page as a tight-knit team responsible for the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead series, which is how it has presented itself for years: one studio with many offices rather than a lead developer with outsourcing partners. That framing matters, because it is why Rockstar never announces a per-project studio list.1
How big the team is
Rockstar told press that the company has more than doubled in size since Red Dead Redemption 2, which shipped in 2018. That is the only scale figure Rockstar itself has offered.2
What the scale bought
The clearest evidence of the expanded team is in the work Rockstar has described: over 600,000 animations against 55,000 in GTA V, new tools and pipelines built specifically to create the most varied character population the studio has made, years of on-the-ground research in Miami and its surroundings, meetings with ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters and gun dealers, more than fifty street artists commissioned for in-game murals, and a vehicle handling team that includes actual racing drivers.32
Context from the parent company
Take-Two publishes through Rockstar Games, 2K and Zynga, and describes the Grand Theft Auto series as one of the most successful entertainment properties of all time with over 470 million units sold-in worldwide as of June 2026. Rockstar's February 2022 community update was the first confirmation that the next entry was in active development.45
What Rockstar credits, and when
Rockstar does not publish development credits before release. The full studio and staff credits for Grand Theft Auto VI will appear in the game itself, which means the definitive answer to this question does not exist publicly until November 19, 2026. Anything published before then is inference from job listings, public profiles or press visits.1
How to read headcount claims
Articles giving precise per-studio numbers for Grand Theft Auto VI are typically built by counting public professional profiles that list a Rockstar office. That method captures neither contractors nor people who do not list an employer, and it cannot distinguish who worked on which project. It produces plausible-looking figures with no way to verify them, which is why we do not repeat them.12
The one number Rockstar did give
More than doubled in size since Red Dead Redemption 2. That is Rockstar's own framing, offered to press in the run-up to the Extended Look, and it is the only company-scale figure attached to this project by the company itself. Set against a game with over ten times GTA V's animation count and a world twice its size, it is at least internally consistent.236
The real headcount figure, from a legal filing
The clearest company-wide number available is not from Rockstar directly but from Take-Two's fiscal 2026 Form 10-K, which discloses 12,909 full-time employees across the whole company as of March 31, 2026, with 9,998 of those in development studios specifically. That figure covers every Take-Two label, not Rockstar alone, and it does not break out Grand Theft Auto VI's own team size within that total. It is still the firmest headcount-adjacent number that exists, because it comes from a regulatory filing rather than an estimate.7
What the budget estimates suggest about scale, clearly labelled
Speculation, not confirmation: analysts have estimated Grand Theft Auto VI's development spend at roughly $1 billion to $1.5 billion, a figure CEO Strauss Zelnick did not confirm but did not dispute either, telling press only that it was expensive. For comparison, GTA V's budget was reported at over $137 million in development costs alone back in 2013. Neither figure is something Rockstar or Take-Two has published directly, but the gap between them, roughly an order of magnitude, is broadly consistent with the animation count, world scale and headcount growth Rockstar has described.89
Practical checklist for reading studio and headcount claims
- Distinguish company-wide Take-Two figures (from SEC filings) from Rockstar-specific or GTA VI-specific claims, which do not exist officially
- Treat dollar-figure budget estimates as analyst inference, not confirmed accounting, however specific they sound8
- Wait for the in-game credits on November 19 for the only complete, official studio and staff list1
It is worth being fair to Rockstar's silence here rather than reading it as evasiveness. Publicly traded companies routinely avoid attaching precise budget or per-project staffing numbers to a single unreleased product, since doing so can move a stock price on incomplete information ahead of an earnings report. Zelnick's willingness to say only "it was expensive" fits a pattern of company-wide caution about pre-release financial specifics, not something unique to this game.
The honest summary is that we know who leads the project, roughly how large the parent company has grown, and almost nothing about how that translates into a per-studio or per-project number. That gap will not close until the credits roll.
