GTA 6 vs GTA 5: every confirmed difference so far

Thirteen years separate them. What Rockstar has actually confirmed about how GTA 6 differs from GTA 5, from protagonists to monetisation.

Grand Theft Auto V launched worldwide on September 17, 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is a thirteen-year gap across three console generations, and it shows in almost every confirmed difference.123

Setting and protagonists

GTA V ran on three playable criminals in and around Los Santos. GTA VI runs on two: Jason and Lucia, in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. Rockstar's own framing puts their relationship at the centre rather than treating them as three interchangeable perspectives.86

The character-switching mechanic changes with it. In GTA V you swapped between three protagonists in the open world. In GTA VI you can swap between Jason and Lucia mid-mission, for example driving as one and shooting from the passenger seat as the other a moment later.4

Simulation depth

This is the largest measurable gap. Rockstar told The New York Times that Grand Theft Auto VI has well over 600,000 animations, against 55,000 in Grand Theft Auto V and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2. That is more than ten times GTA V's animation count.5

Systems that were flat in GTA V now respond. Walking down a street holding a rifle has consequences because civilians react and call the police. Stealing cars is no longer universally trivial: older vehicles can be taken the old way, newer models need a key cloner. Physical fitness returns from San Andreas, so working out builds muscle and poor eating adds weight, and going without sleep or spending days on the run affects the characters.46

Police and consequence

The six-star wanted system, absent in GTA V, returns in GTA VI, with icons under the stars showing which crimes you have been seen committing. Alongside it sits a Criminal Profile that tracks behaviour over time, including gratuitous violence during missions, and does not reset the way wanted stars do.4

Monetisation

GTA V's long tail was built on GTA Online and Shark Cards. GTA VI ships as a single-player experience with no online mode announced, and Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told press visiting the studio there is no in-game monetisation and no generative AI in the game. That is a genuine break from the previous fifteen years of the franchise's business model.35

Scale and hardware

GTA V has been through three console generations, reaching PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in March 2022 with up to 4K and up to 60fps modes. GTA VI starts on that hardware and targets 30fps, spending the budget on world density instead of frame rate.7

Not yet confirmed: mission structure, vehicle and weapon counts, radio stations, whether an online mode follows, and the exact playtime. A Rockstar developer estimated roughly 80 hours for a story-focused playthrough, which is an estimate rather than a specification.

One thing that has not changed

The satire. Press who saw the game reported that GTA VI keeps the series' political and social satire but does not engage with real-world political figures or events. Rockstar is not making a documentary about the present day, the same way GTA V was not one about 2013.4

Budget and price, both far larger, neither officially confirmed for GTA VI

Speculation, not confirmation on the GTA VI side of this comparison: reporting at the time of GTA V's launch put its development budget at over $137 million, with combined development and marketing spend estimated around $265 million, making it the most expensive game of its era. Analyst estimates for Grand Theft Auto VI, which Rockstar and Take-Two have never confirmed, run from roughly $1 billion to $1.5 billion; Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick declined to give a figure but told press it was expensive. Whatever the real number, it is a different order of magnitude from GTA V's budget, consistent with a team Rockstar says has more than doubled in size since Red Dead Redemption 2.910

The sticker price moved less dramatically than the budget did. GTA V launched at $59.99 in 2013; the industry-wide standard rose to $69.99 in 2020, and GTA VI's $79.99 is one further step above that baseline rather than a jump straight from 2013 pricing.11

Common misconceptions about the two games, debunked

  • "GTA 6 has three protagonists like GTA V." No; it has two, Jason and Lucia.8
  • "GTA 6 will have Shark Cards like GTA V's online mode." Not in the single-player release; Rockstar says there is no in-game monetisation.5
  • "The frame rate is a downgrade from GTA V." No; GTA V also shipped at 30fps on original hardware, only gaining 60fps with a 2022 current-gen release.7

Marketing has changed shape too. GTA V's original campaign relied on trailers, magazine previews and a traditional retail push. GTA VI's has included a first-of-its-kind partnership with Netflix for the Extended Look premiere, alongside the same Newswire cadence Rockstar has always used. The scale of pre-order interest, which Take-Two's own CEO called unprecedented on the company's August 7, 2026 earnings call, is also without a clean GTA V equivalent, since pre-order culture for console games was far less developed in 2013.4

None of these gaps make GTA VI a better or worse game before launch, only a differently built one, arriving into a differently built industry. The thirteen years between them changed console hardware three times over, changed how publishers price and market their biggest releases, and changed what players expect a Rockstar open world to simulate. Measuring GTA VI only against GTA V's shadow risks missing how much the baseline itself has moved.

If you are deciding how much weight to put on any single comparison above, weight the ones tied to a specific Rockstar or Take-Two statement more heavily than the ones built from industry context. Animation counts, protagonist numbers and the monetisation stance all trace to a named source; budget and marketing comparisons are closer to informed context than to confirmed fact.

We will keep updating this comparison as more of GTA VI becomes confirmed rather than inferred, particularly on mission structure, vehicle and weapon rosters, and radio stations, none of which Rockstar has detailed yet for the new game.
