How big is the GTA 6 map? What is reported and what is guessed
The only size figures that exist come from press previews, not from Rockstar. What was reported, and why leaked numbers are worthless.
There is no official Grand Theft Auto VI map size. Rockstar's own site does not give one, has never published a world map, and has never described the state of Leonida in square miles or kilometres1. Anyone quoting a precise figure is quoting a fan estimate or a leak1.
The only figures that exist
During the round of previews that accompanied the Extended Look in August 2026, Rockstar gave The New York Times a set of comparisons that outlets then reported. The headline numbers: the overall map is around three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, and Vice City on its own is roughly twice the size of Los Santos from GTA 523.
Reporting from the same preview round adds that Leonida, counting satellite towns, has something like eleven times the urbanised land area of GTA 5, and that the city's roads were drawn about fifteen per cent narrower than GTA 5's to make the place feel denser4.
These are useful, but they are ratios attributed to Rockstar through a newspaper, not published specifications. Treat them as strong reporting rather than as a spec sheet23.
Why leaked map sizes are worthless
Every hard number circulating before those previews came from one of two places: fan measurement of trailer footage, or the unfinished development material that escaped Rockstar in 2022. Trailer measurement is guesswork because you cannot derive scale from a cut sequence with no reference object, and the 2022 material was an early build whose world was nowhere near final1.
We do not publish figures from that material and we do not treat fan-reconstructed maps as evidence. If you see a GTA 6 map image with borders and place names on it, it was drawn by a player, not by Rockstar1.
What size actually tells you
Not much on its own. The more useful reported detail is density rather than area: previews describe an enormous number of accessible interiors, shops, lobbies and rooftops, and note that story locations stay accessible after their missions are over4. A map that is three times larger but mostly empty would play worse than a smaller one full of doors that open4.
Why comparisons are the only honest measure
Open-world map size has never had a standard unit. Studios measure differently, some count water, some count inaccessible terrain, and the same game can be quoted at wildly different areas depending on who did the maths. That is exactly why the figures Rockstar gave were ratios against its own previous games rather than an absolute number23.
Those ratios are still useful. Three times Red Dead Redemption 2's playable area is a very large world by any measure, and doubling Los Santos is a meaningful statement about the city specifically, because Los Santos remains one of the densest urban spaces in the genre23.
What we will and will not publish
We will publish ratios attributed to Rockstar through named reporting, clearly labelled as reporting. We will not publish square-mile figures, fan-measured dimensions, or any number traceable to the 2022 material, and we will not embed reconstructed maps as though they were official1.
If Rockstar publishes a real map or a real figure before launch, this page changes the same day and the source goes at the top. Until then, the shape of Leonida is genuinely unknown, and any site that tells you otherwise is showing you someone's drawing1.
Where the '3x Red Dead 2' figure actually came from
The comparison did not originate at a press conference. Reporting on the preview round says Rob Nelson, Rockstar North's co-studio head, gave the three-times-Red-Dead-2 figure directly to journalists during a hands-off demonstration, and that outlets including IGN and The New York Times were present but only permitted to watch and take notes rather than hold a controller5. That access model matters for how much weight the figure deserves: it is a number a senior developer said out loud to a room of reporters, which is stronger than a marketing one-liner, but it is still unverified by anyone who has actually played the game5.
The same reporting round put a second figure on the record: GTA VI is said to carry more than 600,000 unique animations, against roughly 55,000 in GTA V and about 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 25. That number does not describe map area at all, but it is the kind of concrete, comparable figure Rockstar has been willing to share about scale, which makes the complete silence on square mileage look more like a choice than an oversight.
GTA 5 set the same precedent
This is not new behaviour from Rockstar. GTA V's own Wikipedia entry, summarising years of retrospective coverage, describes its map only as "much larger in area than earlier entries in the series," with no official square-mile figure ever attached to it either6. Precise map sizes for Rockstar's open-world games have always arrived after release, from community measurement of the finished map, not before it from the studio. GTA VI is following the same pattern, just with reporters now relaying ratios instead of silence6.
What we will do when real numbers exist
Once the game ships, someone will measure it properly, the way the community eventually measured GTA V's map after launch, and an actual figure will exist for the first time6. When that happens this page gets rewritten from the ground up, with the ratios currently at the top demoted to a history note about what Rockstar was willing to say before anyone could check it.
One more reason to treat the ratio carefully: 'three times the playable area' depends entirely on how Red Dead Redemption 2's own playable area was defined, and Rockstar has never published that baseline figure either. A ratio built on an unpublished denominator is still directional and still useful, but it cannot be converted into an absolute number no matter how precisely it is repeated across the internet.
Frequently asked questions
How big is the GTA 6 map in square miles?
Nobody knows. Rockstar has never published an area figure, and any specific number you find is a fan estimate1.
Is GTA 6 bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2?
Reportedly yes, around three times the playable area, according to figures Rockstar gave The New York Times23.
Is Vice City bigger than Los Santos?
Press reports put it at roughly twice the size of Los Santos3.
Can I see the official GTA 6 map?
No. Rockstar has not released one. Every map circulating online is a community reconstruction1.
Do leaked map sizes count?
No. They come from unfinished 2022 development material or from measuring trailers, and neither is reliable1.
Who gave the '3x Red Dead 2' map size figure?
Reporting attributes it to Rob Nelson, Rockstar North's co-studio head, speaking to press during a hands-off preview session in August 20265.
Did GTA 5 ever get an official map size at launch?
No. Its map was described only in relative terms as larger than earlier games; a precise figure only emerged after release, from community measurement6.
