GTA 6 frame rate: 30fps at launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X

Rockstar's footage runs at 30fps and that is how GTA 6 ships. What has been said about a performance mode, and what remains unannounced.

Grand Theft Auto VI targets 30 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X at launch. The footage Rockstar has shown runs at that frame rate, and after the August 27, 2026 Extended Look, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told Portuguese outlet Flow Games that this is how the game releases, with further options possibly arriving later.1

Where the number comes from

Rockstar has not published a technical specification page. What exists is the footage itself and Nelson's comment. The Extended Look was 26 minutes long and, per Rockstar's own Newswire post, captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, which makes it a reasonable representation of the shipping game rather than a pre-rendered target.23

Is there a 60fps performance mode?

Not announced. Coverage following the Extended Look reported Rockstar as undecided on adding one, with Nelson leaving the door open to more options in future rather than committing to any. No performance mode appears in any storefront listing.14

Speculation, not confirmation: technical analysts have said a 60fps mode would be difficult on this console generation because the constraint is CPU rather than GPU, and the PS5 Pro shares the base PS5's CPU. Rockstar has neither confirmed nor denied that framing.1

Rockstar's own precedent

This is not new behaviour. Rockstar's February 2022 community update announced GTA V and GTA Online for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with new graphics modes offering up to 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second, plus ray tracing. That was more than eight years after the game's original release. Red Dead Redemption 2 has never received a 60fps console update.5

Not yet confirmed: resolution targets, any PS5 Pro-specific frame rate, whether a performance mode arrives after launch, and how Xbox Series S compares. Rockstar has published none of these.

How much this should matter to you

Thirty frames per second in a Rockstar open world is the norm, not a regression. GTA V shipped at 30fps on PS3 and Xbox 360 and again on PS4 and Xbox One. What the 30fps target buys in GTA VI, judging by the footage Rockstar has chosen to release, is world density: crowd variety, animation count and simulation detail rather than raw motion clarity. Whether that is the right trade is a matter of taste, but it is a deliberate trade, not an oversight.35

What Rockstar has not published

There is no official technical page for Grand Theft Auto VI. Neither storefront lists a resolution, a frame rate, an upscaling method or a graphics mode, and Rockstar has not issued a specification sheet of the kind that usually accompanies a big console release. The PlayStation listing's technical fields cover DualSense support, Remote Play, offline play and the PS5 Pro Enhanced badge, and stop there.4

How to judge it for yourself before launch

The Extended Look is the best available evidence, because Rockstar confirmed it was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5 rather than rendered on development hardware. Download the file from Rockstar's own media page rather than watching a re-upload, since streaming compression on fast camera movement is exactly what makes motion judgement unreliable.23

Then set expectations accordingly. What the 30fps target is buying, based on what Rockstar has shown and said, is crowd density, animation volume and simulation depth rather than motion clarity. If a locked 60fps matters more to you than any of that, this is a game to reassess after launch rather than one to pre-order on hope.13

GTA V's frame rate across three generations, as a labelled precedent

Speculation, not confirmation, but the historical pattern is clear: Grand Theft Auto V ran at 30fps on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, stayed at 30fps on its PS4 and Xbox One re-release in 2014, and only reached a 60fps option with the dedicated PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version Rockstar announced in February 2022, nine years after the original release. Across that entire run, the base target Rockstar shipped with was always 30fps; 60fps was something added later, on newer hardware, as its own project. If Grand Theft Auto VI follows the same shape, a 60fps mode, if it ever arrives, is more likely to come as a future update than a launch feature.6

Common misconceptions about the frame rate, debunked

  • "30fps means the game is unfinished or under-optimised." Not supported; Rockstar has consistently targeted 30fps across generations by choice, not by limitation, per its own released footage.3
  • "A performance mode was promised for launch." No; Nelson left it as a possibility for the future, not a commitment.1
  • "PS5 Pro guarantees 60fps." Not stated anywhere; the Pro badge is about resolution and effects work, not frame rate.4

Practical checklist for players who care about frame rate

  • Set expectations at 30fps for launch on both PS5 and Xbox Series X, based on the only evidence available1
  • Do not delay a purchase specifically waiting for a 60fps mode; none has been dated1
  • Watch for a post-launch Newswire post, since that is how GTA V's own performance mode was eventually announced6
  • Judge visual quality from Rockstar's downloaded Extended Look file rather than a re-upload, since it is the only confirmed in-game capture2

There is a reasonable argument, made by technical commentators rather than Rockstar, that a locked 30fps with more consistent frame pacing is preferable to an unstable 60fps that drops under load, especially in a game this dense with simulated crowds and traffic. That is an opinion about trade-offs, not a fact about the game, and we present it here only as the shape of the debate rather than as something Rockstar has weighed in on.

Console generations do not usually change a launch frame rate target mid-cycle either. The PS5 and Xbox Series X have been out since late 2020, and their processing budgets were fixed at that point; a 60fps mode later in this game's life, if it happens, is more likely to come from optimisation work over time than from new hardware, since neither console is getting faster.

Frequently asked questions

Does GTA 6 run at 60fps?

No. It targets 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X at launch, per Rockstar North's Rob Nelson.1

Will GTA 6 get a performance mode?

Not at launch. Nelson said further options may be added in future, but nothing has been announced.1

Is the PS5 Pro version 60fps?

Not announced. The store lists the game as PS5 Pro Enhanced but Rockstar has published no Pro frame rate.4

Was the Extended Look real gameplay?

Rockstar says it was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5.2

Did GTA 5 ever get 60fps?

Yes, with the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release in March 2022, which added up to 4K and up to 60fps modes.5

Did GTA V always run at 30fps?

On PS3, Xbox 360, PS4 and Xbox One, yes. A 60fps option only arrived with the dedicated PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release Rockstar announced in February 2022.6
