GTA 6 release date: November 19, 2026, and why it was delayed twice
Rockstar has locked GTA 6 to Thursday, November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Here is the confirmed date and both delays.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on Thursday, November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games set that date in a Newswire post on November 6, 2025, and it is still the date printed on the official Grand Theft Auto VI site today.16
The date has moved twice, and only twice
Rockstar first attached a window to the game when Trailer 1 arrived on December 5, 2023. That post promised a 2025 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no month attached.3
The first slip came on May 2, 2025. Rockstar published a short letter saying the game was now set for May 26, 2026, apologising for the wait and asking players to understand that the team needed extra time to hit the quality bar it wanted.2
The second slip came on November 6, 2025, six months after the first. Rockstar moved the date again, this time to November 19, 2026, and used almost the same framing: the extra months would let the studio finish the game with the polish players expect. The same letter mentioned the sprawling state of Leonida and a return to modern-day Vice City.1
How firm is November 19?
Firmer than at any earlier point. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, has now built its entire financial year around the date. In its fiscal first quarter 2027 results on August 7, 2026, the company reiterated a Net Bookings outlook of $8.0 to $8.2 billion and tied that expectation directly to the November 19 launch. Publishers do not repeat a date to investors that they are quietly planning to move.5
Rockstar has also shipped the commercial machinery that normally follows a locked date. Pre-orders opened globally on June 25, 2026, the game has appeared on the PlayStation and Microsoft storefronts with prices attached, and physical boxes are scheduled to reach retailers from November 12.4
What happens in the week before launch
Digital pre-orders unlock pre-loading on November 12, 2026, a full seven days before release, so the download does not have to happen on launch night. The physical version, which contains a download code rather than a disc, also lands in shops from November 12 so that code buyers can pre-load on the same schedule.4
Why the delays are not unusual for Rockstar
Both delay letters were signed by Rockstar Games rather than an individual, both were short, and both avoided naming a cause beyond finishing the game properly. That is the only explanation the company has given on the record. Anything more specific that you read about scope cuts, staffing or engine trouble is not something Rockstar has said.12
What the date means for the rest of 2026
A November 19 launch puts Grand Theft Auto VI inside Take-Two's fiscal year 2027, which ends March 31, 2027, and the company has built its guidance around that. Its fourth quarter fiscal 2026 results, published May 21, 2026, set an initial full-year outlook of $8.0 to $8.2 billion in Net Bookings and explicitly attributed the expected record year to the November 19 launch. That is roughly $1.3 billion above the $6.72 billion the company booked in the year before.7
For players, the practical effect is that the release window is now the most heavily scrutinised date in the industry, and it is unusually well documented. Rockstar has published the launch date, the pre-load date, the retail availability date and the cut-off for pre-order bonuses, which is November 19 at 23:59:59 on the PlayStation Store. Very little about launch week is left to guesswork.48
How to read further delay rumours
Both real delays were announced the same way: a short signed letter on the Rockstar Newswire, with no advance warning and no leak beforehand. If a third delay ever happens, that is where it will appear. A YouTube thumbnail, a Reddit thread or an aggregator headline is not an announcement, and neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has hinted at further movement since November 2025.15
What Take-Two told the SEC, in its own filings
Take-Two's fiscal year 2026 Form 10-K spells out why a single date matters this much to the company. It discloses that Grand Theft Auto products contributed 12.4% of net revenue for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, and it lists dependence on the timing of product releases as a named risk factor, warning that quarterly results fluctuate significantly around hit-title launches and that delays could have a material adverse effect on the business. That filing is a legal document, not marketing copy, which is why its language is more cautious than a Newswire post and also why it is worth reading.9
What history suggests: GTA V only slipped once
Speculation, not confirmation, but grounded in a real precedent: Grand Theft Auto V went through the same two-stage announcement pattern. Rockstar first gave it a season, Spring 2013, in a Newswire post on October 30, 2012. On January 31, 2013, it moved that to a specific day, September 17, 2013, citing the need for extra polish. That date never moved again; GTA V shipped on September 17, 2013, as announced. Grand Theft Auto VI has already had two delays, first from a 2025 season to a specific day (May 26, 2026), then from that day to another specific day (November 19, 2026). If the GTA V pattern holds, once Rockstar names a specific day rather than a season, it does not move a second time. That is a pattern, not a promise.1011
Common misconceptions about the delays, debunked
- "Rockstar delayed it because of a specific leaked feature or engine problem." False. Both letters cite only the need for polish; no specific cause has ever been named.12
- "The delay was just a PR excuse with no real cost." Not supported. Take-Two's own risk disclosures treat release timing as a material financial variable, not a soundbite.9
- "Zelnick called the wait a mistake." No. On record, he described giving Rockstar the extra time as a worthy investment and has called GTA VI arguably the most anticipated entertainment property of all time, which is the opposite framing.10
- "A third delay has already been hinted at." Nothing in any Newswire post, earnings call or SEC filing since November 2025 suggests this.19
Practical checklist for the weeks before November 19
- Match a physical box to your PlayStation account's region group before buying, since codes are region-tied4
- Free up storage ahead of November 12 rather than launch night, even without a confirmed file size4
- Bookmark the Rockstar Newswire and Take-Two's investor relations page directly, since both are named, dated primary sources19
- Treat any date that is not on those two sources as unverified, no matter how confident it sounds
What would actually change this page
Only two things would move this date again: a new signed letter on the Rockstar Newswire, or a change in Take-Two's guidance filed with the SEC. Both of the real delays arrived the first way, and Take-Two's fiscal 2027 guidance has referenced November 19 consistently through its fourth quarter fiscal 2026 report, its fiscal first quarter 2027 report, and its Form 10-K. Until one of those two sources says otherwise, the date stands.179
Frequently asked questions
What is the exact GTA 6 release date?
Thursday, November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar confirmed it on November 6, 2025 and the date is still live on the official site.16
How many times has GTA 6 been delayed?
Twice. From a 2025 window to May 26, 2026 on May 2, 2025, then to November 19, 2026 on November 6, 2025.231
Why was GTA 6 delayed?
Rockstar only said the extra time was needed to finish the game with the level of polish players expect. It has never given a more detailed public reason.12
Could GTA 6 be delayed again?
Nothing suggests it. Take-Two reiterated its full-year outlook around the November 19 launch on August 7, 2026, and pre-orders and physical stock are already scheduled.54
When can I start downloading GTA 6?
Pre-loading begins November 12, 2026 for digital pre-orders, and physical boxes with download codes reach retailers the same day.4
Has a Grand Theft Auto date ever held once Rockstar named a specific day?
Yes. GTA V moved from a Spring 2013 season to September 17, 2013 in January 2013, and that specific day never changed again.1011
Does Take-Two's SEC filing say anything about the release date risk?
Yes. Its fiscal 2026 Form 10-K lists dependence on release timing as a named risk factor and discloses that Grand Theft Auto products made up 12.4% of net revenue that year.9
Did Strauss Zelnick call the delays a mistake?
No. He described giving Rockstar extra time as a worthy investment and has called GTA VI arguably the most anticipated entertainment property of all time.10
