GTA 6 price: $79.99 standard, $99.99 Ultimate, and what you get

Take-Two confirmed GTA 6 pricing on June 24, 2026. Here are the official figures, what each tier includes and how the $80 debate played out.

Grand Theft Auto VI costs $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition in the United States. Those are not estimates. Take-Two Interactive put both numbers in its own press release on June 24, 2026, one day before pre-orders opened, and both storefronts show the same figures.123

What the $79.99 buys

The Standard Edition is the game. Bought before November 20, 2026, it also carries the Vintage Vice City Pack and, on digital pre-orders, a free month of GTA+. Nothing else is gated behind a higher tier at launch.15

What the extra $20 buys

The Ultimate Edition adds the Ultimate Edition Upgrade: a run of vehicles, weapons with personalised variants, apparel, mod shops, salons, tattoo parlours, stores and safehouse vehicles that unlock across chapters of Jason and Lucia's story rather than all at once. Rockstar publishes the full item list on its support site.5

You do not have to decide now. The Ultimate Edition Upgrade is sold separately as a digital add-on, listed at $20.00 on the Xbox Store, and Standard Edition owners can buy it at any point after their copy is redeemed. That includes physical buyers, once their download code is used.35

The $80 debate, honestly

In the months before pricing was announced, a lot of coverage assumed Rockstar would push the industry past $100 for a standard edition. It did not. The standard tier landed at $79.99, in line with other recent premium console releases rather than above them.1

On Take-Two's August 7, 2026 earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick said pre-order demand was unprecedented, adding that no one had seen anything like it at Take-Two or in the industry, while cautioning that not a single unit had been sold yet and pre-orders can be cancelled. The company reiterated its full-year outlook at the same time. Read that as strong demand, not as a verified sales number.46

Not yet confirmed: prices outside the US are set by each regional storefront and Rockstar has not published a global price table. Check your own PlayStation or Microsoft store for the local figure.

Is there any cheaper route?

Not from Rockstar. There is no subscription that includes the game at launch, and Rockstar has described GTA VI as a single-player experience with no additional purchases inside it. The free GTA+ month attached to digital pre-orders is a membership for GTA Online and the GTA+ Games Library, not a discount on GTA VI itself.15

What you are not paying for

It is worth being precise about what $79.99 covers, because the framing matters. There is no season pass, no battle pass, no announced expansion and no announced online mode with its own currency. Rockstar North's head of development told press visiting the studio that there is no in-game monetisation at all in the single-player release. The only additional purchase Rockstar sells is the Ultimate Edition Upgrade.45

That is a different proposition from the last decade of Grand Theft Auto, where the sticker price was an entry fee to an ecosystem with its own economy. Whether $79.99 is good value depends on how you weigh a finite campaign against a service, but the two are not priced on the same logic.4

Regional pricing

The $79.99 and $99.99 figures are US dollars. Rockstar and Take-Two have not published a global price table, and each regional storefront sets its own local price, which is why converted figures circulating online often do not match what you actually see at checkout. Open your own PlayStation or Microsoft store to get the real number for your account's country.23

How $79.99 compares with GTA V, and with the rest of the industry

Grand Theft Auto V launched in 2013 at $59.99, the standard console price at the time. That standard moved to $69.99 industry-wide starting with the PS5 and Xbox Series X launch window in 2020, as publishers including 2K, a fellow Take-Two label, were among the first to charge $10 more on next-gen hardware. Grand Theft Auto VI's $79.99 is a further $10 step above that 2020 standard, arriving six years later, rather than a jump straight from GTA V's 2013 price. Framed as a percentage, it is a smaller single jump than the 2020 increase was.67

What Zelnick has said about the number itself

Beyond the pre-order demand commentary, Take-Two's CEO has also defended the figure directly, telling press around the August 7, 2026 earnings call that Rockstar got the pricing right. That is a company executive's own assessment of a price the company set, so read it as confidence rather than as independent verification, but it is worth recording that the person who approved $79.99 has since publicly stood behind it rather than hedged.8

How the price stacks up against what GTA V cost to make

For context on the other side of the ledger: reporting at the time estimated Grand Theft Auto V's development budget at over $137 million, with combined development and marketing spend put at roughly $265 million, which made it the most expensive game produced up to that point. Those are third-party estimates rather than a Rockstar-published figure, and no comparable number exists yet for Grand Theft Auto VI, but they are a useful reminder that even the last mainline entry's price of $59.99 was set against a nine-figure budget, not a small one.9

Common misconceptions about the price, debunked

  • "GTA 6 is the first $100 game." No; only the Ultimate Edition reaches $99.99, and that figure includes bonus content on top of the base game.1
  • "The price is different in the UK because of a straight currency conversion." No; £69.99 and £89.99 are set regionally, not converted from the US dollar figures at the day's exchange rate.6
  • "Rockstar broke the price ceiling for the industry." No; $69.99 was already standard since 2020, and GTA VI's Standard Edition sits one step above that, not several.7

One more angle worth stating plainly: none of these comparisons make the price right or wrong for any individual buyer, they just place it in context. A single $79.99 purchase with no subscription and no in-game spending is a different kind of value question than a $59.99 game in 2013 that quietly became the entry point to a decade-long live service. Compare the number, not just the sticker.
