GTA 6 Standard vs Ultimate Edition: which one is worth $20 more

There are exactly two editions of Grand Theft Auto VI. The Standard Edition costs $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99. Take-Two confirmed both figures in its June 24, 2026 press release, and both storefronts match. There is no Collector's Edition and no steelbook tier.²⁴⁵

What is identical

The game. Both editions contain the same Grand Theft Auto VI, the same story, the same map. Both also carry the Vintage Vice City Pack if bought before November 20, 2026: a '55 Vapid Stanier sedan and garage, outfits and hairstyles, and an exclusive weapon pattern. Digital pre-orders of either edition include one month of GTA+. Nothing about the campaign is gated behind the higher tier.¹

What the Ultimate Edition adds

The Ultimate Edition bundles the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, which Rockstar lists in full on its support site. It includes the '95 Grotti Cheetah, the '67 Vapid Dominator Buggy and garage, the Shitzu Squalo, Jason's safehouse vehicles, a Ganado retro build and a classic car collection; Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers with personalised weapon variants; Vice City Styles apparel and Goodtime Gear; and a set of businesses including Rideout Customs, One-Eyed Willie's Mod Shop, the Electric Fang Tattoo Parlor, Sara's Unisex Salon, Stock 305 Clothing Store and the PTT Youngin$ compound.¹³

The important structural detail: Rockstar says these bonuses are threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter. They are not a menu of unlocks you receive on the title screen, which changes how much of the value you get in the first few hours.¹

The one fact that removes the pressure

You do not have to choose now. The Ultimate Edition Upgrade is sold separately as a digital add-on and can be bought at any point after your Standard Edition copy is redeemed, including by physical buyers once the code in the box has been used. It is listed at $20.00 on the Xbox Store, which means the two routes cost the same.¹⁴

There is also no physical Ultimate Edition at all. If you want a box on a shelf, the Standard Edition is your only option and the upgrade has to be bought digitally afterwards.¹

So which one

If the cosmetic and vehicle content appeals and you know you will play the story through, the bundled Ultimate Edition is the tidier purchase. If you are unsure, buy Standard, play a few chapters, and add the upgrade if you find yourself wanting it. There is no mechanical advantage or story content behind the paywall, so waiting costs nothing but a second transaction.¹⁴

What Rockstar has not clarified

Two things are genuinely vague. First, the pacing: Rockstar says Ultimate items are uncovered behind each chapter, but it has not said how many chapters there are or how early the first bonuses appear, so how much of the content you see in a short playthrough is unknown. Second, longevity: nothing has been said about whether Ultimate content carries into any future online mode, because no such mode has been announced.¹³

A note on the free GTA+ month

Both editions include a month of GTA+ on digital pre-orders, and it is easy to misread what that is. GTA+ is a membership for the existing GTA Online attached to GTA V, plus access to the GTA+ Games Library. On PlayStation it auto-renews at the normal monthly price after the free month unless cancelled, and it must be redeemed by March 31, 2027. On Xbox it must be redeemed within 180 days of the pre-order. It is not a Grand Theft Auto VI subscription.⁵⁴

If you have no interest in GTA Online, that bonus is worth nothing to you and should not influence which edition you pick. The only real difference between the tiers remains the Ultimate Edition Upgrade.¹²

Regional prices for both editions

The $20 gap holds outside the US too, though the currency figures are not straight conversions. In the UK the two editions are £69.99 and £89.99, a £20 gap; in the Eurozone they are €79.99 and €99.99, matching the dollar figures numerically even though the exchange rate does not. Whichever region you buy in, the difference between tiers is set locally, not derived from the US price on the day.⁶

Common misconceptions about the two editions, debunked

• "Ultimate is required to see the full story." No; both editions contain the identical campaign.¹
• "You lose the pre-order bonus if you buy Standard instead of Ultimate." No; the Vintage Vice City Pack applies to any purchase before November 20, 2026, regardless of edition.¹
• "The Ultimate Edition Upgrade gets more expensive after launch." Not stated either way; Rockstar has not addressed post-launch pricing.¹

Practical checklist for choosing

• If you are certain you will finish the story, the bundled Ultimate Edition is marginally simpler than two separate purchases¹⁴
• If you are unsure you will finish it, buy Standard and decide on the $20 upgrade later, since it never disappears¹
• Physical buyers should default to Standard, since no physical Ultimate Edition exists at any price¹

It is also worth noting what neither edition includes, since that shapes the comparison as much as what they do include. Neither tier adds extra story content, extra missions, or a different ending; the Ultimate Edition Upgrade is entirely cosmetic and convenience items, vehicles, weapons, apparel and properties, layered onto an identical campaign. If you are weighing the two editions on story grounds, there is nothing to weigh.

That also means the decision carries very little risk either way. Because the upgrade never disappears and never goes on a separate sale cycle that has been announced, there is no real cost to defaulting to the cheaper option and upgrading only if the early hours make you want more. The reverse, buying Ultimate and regretting it, is a smaller risk still, since $20 is a modest premium relative to the base price.
