Does GTA 6 run better on PS5 Pro? What 'PS5 Pro Enhanced' means

The PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 as PS5 Pro Enhanced. What that label guarantees, what Rockstar has not said, and whether you need the Pro.

Updated September 3, 2026 · 6 min read · 6 sources

Grand Theft Auto VI carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced badge on its PlayStation Store product page. That is the only official statement anyone has about how the game behaves on Sony's mid-generation console. Rockstar has published no separate Pro feature list.1

What the badge actually guarantees

PS5 Pro Enhanced is a platform label, not a specification sheet. It means the developer has done work specifically for the Pro hardware. It does not, on its own, tell you the resolution, the frame rate, whether upscaling is used, or which of those three the extra power went into. Rockstar has not said.1

The same store page lists the rest of the technical facts we do have: a PS5 version, DualSense vibration and trigger effects, Remote Play support, offline play, and one player.1

The frame rate question

The footage Rockstar has shown runs at 30fps, and after the August 2026 Extended Look, coverage citing Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson reported that 30fps is how the game ships on PS5 and Xbox Series X, with further options possibly added later. No separate PS5 Pro performance target has been announced.4

Speculation, not confirmation: technical analysts have argued a 60fps mode is unlikely on Pro because the Pro shares the base PS5's CPU rather than a faster one, so a CPU-bound 30fps target would not simply double. That is an outside assessment, not something Rockstar or Sony has stated.4

What Rockstar showed, and on what

Both Trailer 2 and the 26-minute Extended Look were captured from in-game footage on PlayStation 5 rather than a Pro. Rockstar confirmed the Extended Look capture on the Newswire, and its official site carries the line that Grand Theft Auto VI "Plays Best On PlayStation 5", which reflects a marketing arrangement with Sony rather than a technical measurement.325

Not yet confirmed: PS5 Pro resolution, frame rate, ray tracing, upscaling or any Pro-exclusive feature. Rockstar has published none of it, and neither has Sony beyond the store badge.

Do you need a PS5 Pro?

On the evidence available, no. The game is confirmed for the base PlayStation 5, the footage Rockstar chose to show the world was captured on a base PS5, and no Pro-only content or mode has been announced. If you already own a Pro you will presumably get a better-looking version. Buying one for this game specifically means buying on an assumption Rockstar has not yet validated.15

What the PlayStation listing does tell you

Setting the Pro question aside, the PlayStation Store page is one of the more informative official documents about the game. It confirms a PS5 version with DualSense vibration and trigger effects, Remote Play, offline play enabled, one player, optional in-game purchases in its generic disclosures, and a release date and time of November 19, 2026 at 06:00 CET. Sony's own game page adds that the DualSense haptics react to your choices and simulate environmental factors across Leonida and Vice City.1

How to decide about hardware

If you already own a PS5 Pro, nothing here is a reason to worry: the badge means Rockstar did Pro-specific work, and the base PS5 version is confirmed to run the game regardless. If you own a base PS5 and are wondering whether to upgrade for this release, the honest position is that you would be spending money on an unspecified benefit. Rockstar has published no Pro comparison, and Sony has published nothing beyond the badge.12

The most telling detail is what Rockstar chose to show. Given a marketing relationship with Sony and a 26-minute showcase to fill, the studio captured everything on a base PlayStation 5. If the Pro version were a dramatic visual step up, that would have been an obvious thing to demonstrate.35

What history suggests: Rockstar's mid-generation habits

Speculation, not confirmation, but grounded in Rockstar's own past behaviour: the studio has a track record of treating enhanced hardware as a separate, later project rather than a day-one guarantee. Grand Theft Auto V did not get its 4K and 60fps modes automatically when the PS5 launched in November 2020; those arrived with a dedicated current-gen release Rockstar announced in February 2022, over a year later, alongside confirmation that the next Grand Theft Auto was in development. That is the closest precedent for how Rockstar treats mid-generation hardware jumps: as their own announced product, not a silent patch.6

Common misconceptions about PS5 Pro Enhanced, debunked

  • "PS5 Pro Enhanced means 60fps." Not stated. The badge confirms Pro-specific work, nothing about frame rate.1
  • "The Extended Look was upgraded PS5 Pro footage." No; Rockstar confirmed it was captured on base PlayStation 5.35
  • "Sony's 'Plays Best On PlayStation 5' line is a technical claim." It reflects a marketing arrangement, not a published benchmark against Xbox.2

Practical checklist for PS5 Pro owners and buyers

  • Do not buy a PS5 Pro specifically for this game until Rockstar publishes Pro-specific resolution or frame rate details
  • Expect the base PS5 experience to be the fully supported baseline, since that is what all official footage has shown
  • Watch the PlayStation Store listing itself for any change to the Pro Enhanced description closer to launch1
  • Treat any leaked "PS5 Pro comparison" video before launch as unverifiable, since no outlet has had hands-on access

What would change this page

A dedicated Rockstar Newswire post detailing PS5 Pro performance modes, a change to the PlayStation Store's technical specification fields, or hands-on previews from outlets that specifically compare base PS5 and Pro hardware would each move this from unconfirmed to confirmed. None of those exist as of September 3, 2026.1

There is also a cost side to this decision worth naming. A PS5 Pro costs meaningfully more than a base console, and buying one is a real financial choice, not a cosmetic upgrade. Making that choice on the strength of a storefront badge alone, before Rockstar has published a single Pro-specific number, is a bet on an assumption rather than a response to evidence. If you were already planning the upgrade for reasons beyond this one game, nothing here changes that; if this game is the only reason, it is worth waiting for a real specification.
