GTA 6 age rating: why it still says Rating Pending

Grand Theft Auto VI has no final age rating. Take-Two's own press release states it in one line: Grand Theft Auto VI is not yet rated. The same wording appeared in the Trailer 2 press release back in May 2025 and has not changed since.¹⁵

What each source shows today

A search of the ESRB's public ratings database returns no entry for Grand Theft Auto VI. The Xbox Store carries the interim label "Rating Pending, Likely Mature 17+" with the standard note that the game may contain content inappropriate for children. Rockstar's own site and PlayStation's listing use the same generic notice, without a certificate mark.³²⁴

Why a rating this late is normal

The ESRB rates a finished or near-finished product, based on material the publisher submits. For a game this large that submission tends to happen close to release, and the rating summary is often published only weeks before launch. Nothing about the pending status is unusual or a sign of trouble.³

What to expect, and how confident to be

Speculation, not confirmation: every mainline Grand Theft Auto since the third has carried an M for Mature 17+ rating in North America, and Microsoft's own storefront calls Mature 17+ likely. Nobody serious expects a different outcome, but the certificate and its content descriptors do not exist until the ESRB publishes them, and we will not print descriptors that have not been issued.²³

For parents deciding now

You do not need a certificate to make this call. Grand Theft Auto VI is a crime story about two adults, told from inside criminality, with the series' usual violence, drug references and sexual content. Press who were shown the game describe a six-star police pursuit system, the ability to walk around armed with visible consequences, and satire that stays firmly adult even while avoiding real political figures. It is not a game aimed at children, and Rockstar has never suggested otherwise.⁶⁴

One practical note: the free month of GTA+ bundled with digital pre-orders cannot be redeemed on child accounts with restrictions on age-restricted content, per Microsoft's own listing. If you are buying for a household with restricted accounts, factor that in.²

Where the rating will appear first

Three places, in roughly this order: the ESRB's own public database, which currently returns no entry for the game; the storefront listings, which will swap the Rating Pending placeholder for a certificate mark; and Rockstar's own site, which today carries only the generic notice that content may be inappropriate for children. Nothing is confirmed until at least one of those changes.³²⁴

Why content descriptors matter more than the letter

The rating letter will surprise nobody. The content descriptors that come with it are the part worth reading, because they list what the board actually found: the categories of violence, language, sexual content, drug use and gambling present in the game. Those descriptors do not exist yet, and we will not reproduce speculative lists as though they had been issued.³

Ratings outside North America

The ESRB covers the United States and Canada. Europe uses PEGI, Australia has its own classification board, Germany uses USK and Brazil its own system, and each rates independently. None of those bodies has published a Grand Theft Auto VI classification, and Take-Two's statement that the game is not yet rated applies across the board.¹³

What GTA V's real descriptors looked like, as a labelled precedent

For a sense of what a Mature rating actually itemises rather than just implies: GTA V's ESRB entry lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol, alongside a note that online interactions are not rated by the ESRB. Grand Theft Auto VI's eventual descriptors do not exist yet and will not necessarily match this list exactly, but it shows the level of specificity the board publishes once a rating is issued, well beyond a single letter grade.⁷

History suggests the process can move the rating, not just confirm it

Speculation about GTA VI, grounded in real history: ratings are not always a formality for this series. In 2005, the ESRB briefly upgraded Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas from Mature to Adults Only after a modder unlocked hidden sexual content that had shipped, disabled, on the retail discs. Rockstar suspended production, patched the content out, and the game returned to a Mature rating within a few months. That episode is the clearest example in the franchise's history of an ESRB rating actually changing after release rather than simply confirming what everyone expected, and it is why content descriptors, not just the headline letter, are worth taking seriously once GTA VI's are published.⁸

Practical checklist for parents and buyers

• Do not rely on the Xbox "Likely Mature 17+" label as a final rating; it is explicitly provisional²
• Read the eventual content descriptors, not just the letter grade, once the ESRB publishes them³
• Check PEGI, USK or your own region's board separately, since none of them has rated the game yet either¹³

The Hot Coffee episode is also a useful reminder of what actually triggers a rating change: not developer intent, since Rockstar had disabled the content, but what shipped on the disc regardless of whether players could normally reach it. It is a reason to take the eventual GTA VI content descriptors seriously as a document rather than skimming past them once the letter grade lands, since the letter alone did not tell the full story even for GTA V's predecessor.

None of this means Grand Theft Auto VI is at any real risk of an unusual outcome; every mainline entry since GTA III has settled at Mature, and Take-Two has never suggested otherwise. It is simply a reason to read the certificate when it lands rather than assume the letter is the whole story.
