GTA 6 age rating: rated M for Mature 17+, with PEGI 18 in Europe

Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB, the US ratings board. The rating covers the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions and comes with seven content descriptors plus an In-Game Purchases notice. In Europe, the UK PlayStation Store lists the game as PEGI 18.¹⁶

The official ESRB descriptors

The same list appears on the US PlayStation Store and Xbox Store product pages, and in the rating block under Rockstar's October 15, 2026 Launch Trailer post. Every official source now agrees, which was not the case a month earlier.⁴⁵³

When the rating appeared

For most of 2026 the game had no rating at all. Take-Two's June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement said plainly that it was not yet rated, and the previous version of this page, written on September 3, 2026, still reported a pending status.¹¹

The final rating surfaced at the start of October. Coverage dated October 3 and October 6, 2026 describes the M rating and its descriptors as live on the ESRB's site and the US storefronts, and by October 15 Rockstar was printing the descriptor list under its own Newswire posts. The ESRB page itself does not show the date it was issued.⁹⁸³¹

What the descriptors mean, in plain language

The ESRB publishes a definition for every label. Here is what each one on GTA VI's list means, in our words, based on the board's ratings guide:²

• Mature 17+: content the board considers generally suitable for ages 17 and up, which can include intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and strong language.²
• Blood and Gore: blood is shown, and so is the mutilation of body parts.²
• Intense Violence: fighting that looks graphic and realistic, possibly with weapons, realistic injury and death.²
• Mature Humor: adult jokes, including sexual references.²
• Nudity: nudity shown graphically or for an extended time. It is the stronger of the board's two nudity labels; the milder one is Partial Nudity.²
• Strong Language: profanity that is explicit, frequent, or both.²
• Strong Sexual Content: explicit or frequent sexual behavior, possibly with nudity. It sits above the milder Sexual Content and Sexual Themes labels.²
• Use of Drugs and Alcohol: illegal drugs and alcohol are consumed in the game, not just mentioned. The board uses separate Reference labels when they only come up in passing.²
• In-Game Purchases: the game offers digital extras for real money. The ESRB definition is broad and covers upgrades and subscriptions as well as in-game currency; GTA VI's store pages sell an Ultimate Edition Upgrade and bundle a GTA+ month with pre-orders.²⁴

What is not on the list

One label is missing, and that is informative too. The ESRB has a Simulated Gambling descriptor, and GTA VI's list does not include it. Dexerto pointed this out when the ratings went live; whether that means casino games are absent from the game is speculation, since the rating only describes what the board reviewed.²¹⁸

PEGI 18 in Europe, USK 18 in Germany

The UK PlayStation Store lists GTA VI as PEGI 18 with four content icons: Violence, Sexual Content, Drugs and In-Game Purchases. The German PlayStation Store shows USK 18, the rating from Germany's own board.⁶⁷

PEGI's own site is where its detailed consumer text lives. A detailed GTA VI entry reportedly appeared there on October 2, 2026 and was later removed; IBTimes UK reported on the deleted wording but said it could not check it against a live page. We could not open PEGI's database for this update, so we are not repeating that removed text here.⁹⁸

How it compares with GTA V

The ESRB list is identical. GTA V's entry carries the same M for Mature 17+ rating with the same seven descriptors, from Blood and Gore through Use of Drugs and Alcohol. If GTA V was not right for your household, the rating gives no reason to expect GTA VI to be milder.¹⁰¹

There are two differences on paper. GTA V's entry carries a note that online interactions are not rated, while GTA VI's carries In-Game Purchases. And GTA V's page includes a long summary of specific scenes, including an interrogation sequence the player takes part in, a strip club lap dance, drug use and drunk driving, while GTA VI's page, as of October 16, 2026, only states the rating and lists the descriptors.¹⁰¹

For parents deciding now

The rating is the clearest signal you will get before launch, and it says this is a game for adults: the ESRB places it at 17 and up, and it carries the strongest versions of the violence, sex, nudity and language labels.¹²

One practical note for shared consoles: on Xbox, the free GTA+ month that comes with pre-orders cannot be redeemed on child accounts that restrict age-restricted content, according to Microsoft's listing.⁵

When a GTA rating changed after release

History, not a prediction: in 2005 the ESRB briefly raised Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas from Mature to Adults Only after a mod exposed hidden sexual content that had shipped, disabled, on the disc. Rockstar removed the content and the game returned to Mature. Nothing suggests anything similar for GTA VI; it is simply why the descriptors are worth reading rather than only the letter.¹²
