How many GTA 6 trailers are there? Every official video so far
Two numbered trailers and one 26-minute Extended Look. The dates, what each revealed and the records Trailer 1 set on YouTube.
Two. Rockstar has released exactly two numbered trailers for Grand Theft Auto VI, plus one longer piece called An Extended Look. The official media page on rockstargames.com lists three videos in total, which is the cleanest way to settle the question.4
Trailer 1: December 5, 2023
Rockstar announced it a month in advance. On November 8, 2023, co-founder Sam Houser published a short note marking the studio's 25th anniversary and promising the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto in early December.6
The trailer landed on December 5 with the setting attached: the state of Leonida, home to Vice City and beyond, described as the biggest and most immersive evolution of the series yet, coming 2025 to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.1
Trailer 2: May 6, 2025
Trailer 2 arrived four days after the first delay was announced and gave the story its shape: Jason and Lucia, an easy score that goes wrong, and a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. Take-Two's accompanying release confirmed all footage was captured on PlayStation 5.2
An Extended Look: August 27, 2026
This is not a trailer and Rockstar does not call it one. It premiered on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET on August 27, 2026, then arrived on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI site at 9 p.m. ET the same day. It ran 26 minutes according to Netflix's own listing, and Rockstar confirmed it was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5.37
The records Trailer 1 set
Guinness World Records logged Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 1 at 90,421,491 views in its first 24 hours, making it the most viewed video game trailer in a day, and the most viewed non-music video on YouTube in 24 hours at the time.5
What else Rockstar has published
Beyond the three videos, the official media page hosts nine short clips including the cover art animation and character clips for Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, 99 screenshots, 51 Ultimate Edition images, 12 Vintage Vice City Pack images and 22 artwork and wallpaper files. That is the complete official media library.4
Why the count confuses people
Three things get miscounted. The Extended Look is frequently called Trailer 3, which Rockstar does not; the nine short clips on the official media page, including the cover art animation and the Jason and Lucia character clips, are sometimes counted as trailers; and re-uploads with added titles circulate as though they were separate Rockstar releases. The media page is the authority, and it lists three videos.4
What each release told us
- Trailer 1 established the setting, the state of Leonida and Vice City, and a 2025 window on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S1
- Trailer 2 established the premise: Jason and Lucia, a score gone wrong and a conspiracy across the state2
- An Extended Look was the first substantial gameplay showing, 26 minutes captured in-game on PS537
Between Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 there was a seventeen-month gap, and between Trailer 2 and the Extended Look nearly sixteen months. Rockstar's release cadence for video has been roughly one substantial piece every year and a half.123
Breaking down the Guinness record further
The 90,421,491-view record was specifically for a video game trailer in its first 24 hours, and Guinness also recognised it at the time as the most viewed non-music video on YouTube in a single day, a broader category that put it alongside film trailers and major cultural events rather than just other game announcements. Reaching that number required the trailer to be shared and rewatched well beyond the core Grand Theft Auto audience, which is part of why the count is treated as a genuine cultural marker rather than just a franchise-specific one.5
Common misconceptions about the trailer count, debunked
- "The Extended Look is Trailer 3." Rockstar's own media page does not call it that, and does not number it.4
- "There have been more than three official videos." The short clips on the media page are character and cover-art pieces, not separate trailers, by Rockstar's own categorisation.4
- "Trailer 1's record has since been broken by GTA 6 itself." Not stated; Rockstar has not published updated cumulative view figures for any of its videos.5
Practical checklist for anyone catching up before launch
- Watch in order for context: Trailer 1, Trailer 2, then the Extended Look123
- Use Rockstar's own media page rather than a re-upload for the least compressed versions4
- Do not count fan edits, reaction videos or leaked 2022 footage as part of the official three
Put the three releases side by side and a shape emerges: each one served a different job rather than repeating the last. Trailer 1 sold a place. Trailer 2 sold two people and a premise. The Extended Look sold a feeling, twenty-six minutes of how the game actually moves and plays. That progression, from setting to characters to systems, is a fairly standard marketing arc, but Rockstar stretched it across nearly three years instead of the usual few months, which is part of why each release generated as much attention as it did.
It is also worth noting how unusually restrained the schedule was compared with most big releases. Many publishers release a steady drip of teasers, developer diaries and gameplay snippets in the run-up to launch. Rockstar published three pieces of video across nearly three years and let each one carry the entire marketing load for months at a time, a pattern that made every release an event rather than one entry in a constant stream.
Whether that restraint continues between now and November 19 is not something Rockstar has committed to either way, but based on the cadence so far, a launch trailer close to release week would not be a surprise, even though nothing has been announced.
We will update this page the moment a fourth video is announced or the media page changes shape, since the count itself is the entire point of the article.
