GTA 6 Duke 556 assault rifle: the named AR from the Extended Look

Jason grabs the Duke 556 off a body in the Extended Look's final shootout. What the rifle is and what the coloured target markers mean

Updated September 3, 2026 · 4 min read · 13 sources

The Duke 556 assault rifle turned up in the Extended Look, the roughly half-hour gameplay presentation Rockstar released on August 27, 2026.2 During the final shootout Jason takes the rifle off a fallen attacker and carries on with it, which is the clearest look so far at GTA 6 letting you scavenge a better gun in the middle of a fight instead of carrying everything from the start.1

The name is doing a lot of work

The 556 in the name reads as the 5.56mm cartridge that AR-15 and M4 pattern rifles fire, and the Duke prefix ties it to Duke Arms, the in-universe manufacturer whose logo also appears on the carbine Jason aims in the official screenshots.17 It is one of the few GTA 6 guns where breakdowns are willing to print a model designation rather than a description, though Rockstar itself has not published the name in text.1

Why this scene mattered

The Duke 556 sequence gave the first proper look at GTA 6's adrenaline or slow-motion targeting system. As Jason lines up shots, the game highlights areas on enemies in two colours: yellow over limbs such as knees, elbows and hands, and red over the chest and head.1 KeenGamer describes the same mechanic as slow-motion aiming that highlights potential kill or incapacitation points, and SVG points out Jason shooting attackers in the legs to disable rather than kill them.45

Rifles in the rest of the presentation

The Extended Look leans on rifles heavily. Engadget's breakdown describes Jason firing an automatic rifle out of a car's rear window at pursuing police vehicles and helicopters during a chase, and both protagonists hot-swapping between weapons as the situation changes.6 Combined with the pickup moment, that suggests rifles are meant to be handled loosely in GTA 6: dropped, taken from bodies and swapped mid-sequence rather than locked to a loadout.16

The number in the name: 5.56mm in the real world

The '556' in Duke 556 lines up with 5.56x45mm NATO, the cartridge fired by the real AR-15 and M4 platform the rifle's silhouette resembles. That round was adopted alongside the M4 by the US military in 1994, after Colt's Manufacturing Company developed the carbine with FN Herstal and Remington Arms also producing it under contract, and it remains the standard US infantry cartridge today.8 Reading a caliber into a fictional gun's name is common shorthand in games and film, and it does not amount to Rockstar publishing a real damage or ballistics figure for the Duke 556.81

More detail from other Extended Look recaps

Coverage of the same firefight agrees on the broad strokes and adds detail on top. Push Square describes it as part of a wider change where guns are easier and quicker to pick up than in past Rockstar games, and separately notes that players can now swap between two carried weapons with one button instead of the wheel.9 eXputer's recap names the ability Jason uses a 'Focus' skill and adds two details beyond the color-coded markers: an accurate shot can disarm an enemy by knocking the gun out of their hand, and players can fire deliberately wide of an NPC during a robbery to intimidate rather than kill them.10 SlashGear frames the whole update as part of the series dropping auto-aim in favor of a fully manual aiming system with optional assist.11 Engadget's separate breakdown adds that the sequence ends with a Max Payne 3-style slow-motion killcam on the final kill, and reads the color-coded targeting as inheriting a mechanic Rockstar first sketched out in GTA IV.12

What an assault rifle usually gets in Rockstar's system

Nothing about the Duke 556's own stats, price or attachment slots has been shown. But for scale, GTA 5 sells every assault-rifle-class weapon at Ammu-Nation with attachment, livery and tint options, and lets several of them be upgraded into an Mk II variant with extra customization and special ammo types through a Weapon Workshop or Agency Armory.13 If the Duke 556 follows that pattern once GTA 6 ships, it would be the kind of gun a player keeps using rather than drops after the firefight that introduces it.13

One rifle or two: the case for and against

GamesRadar and PC Gamer both leave open whether the Duke 556 is simply the Duke Arms carbine relabelled for that scene or a genuinely separate weapon, since both share the same manufacturer branding and a similar AR-pattern silhouette.17 The strongest argument for two distinct guns is that Rockstar bothered to give this one a name at all. Of the dozen-plus rifles visible across the trailers, screenshots and Extended Look, the Duke 556 is one of the few that any outlet is willing to print as a name rather than a description, which suggests Rockstar treats it as a specific pickup tied to that mission rather than one entry in a generic pile of AR-pattern rifles.1 The safest way to read the two right now is as one family of hardware wearing different dressings depending on who is holding it and what the scene calls for, a standard-issue look for a screenshot and a more distinct, nameable version for a set-piece moment Rockstar wanted press to remember.12

What is not confirmed

  • Damage, recoil, magazine size and fire modes. No figures exist.13
  • Whether the Duke 556 is a separate weapon from the Duke Arms carbine or a variant of it.17
  • Whether the yellow and red markers are a permanent ability or tied to a specific skill or item.14
  • Where you buy it, and what it costs.3
Not yet confirmed: the Duke 556's stats, its place in the weapon wheel, or whether the non-lethal marker system is always available.

Frequently asked questions

What do the yellow and red markers on enemies mean?

GamesRadar reads them as the slow-motion targeting system flagging non-lethal areas in yellow, such as knees, elbows and hands, and lethal areas in red on the chest and head. Rockstar has not explained the system in text.14

Can you keep the Duke 556 after picking it up?

That is not confirmed. The Extended Look only shows Jason grabbing it from a body and using it during the fight, and Rockstar has not detailed how scavenged weapons are stored.1

What does the '556' in Duke 556 refer to?

It reads as a nod to 5.56x45mm NATO, the cartridge the real AR-15/M4 platform the rifle resembles actually fires, though this is a naming convention rather than a confirmed in-game stat.18

What is the 'Focus' ability Jason uses in this scene?

eXputer's Extended Look recap names it Focus, describing it as a slow-motion targeting skill that also lets an accurate shot disarm an enemy instead of hitting a kill zone.10
