GTA 6 MP5-style SMG: the submachine gun from the Trailer 2 robbery
Jason and Lucia both carry an MP5 lookalike during the Trailer 2 robbery, and Jason's has a red dot sight. Here is what is known and what is not
Early in Trailer 2, during the armed robbery that opens the run of action shots, both Jason and Lucia are carrying the same compact submachine gun. GamesRadar identifies it as modelled on the Heckler & Koch MP5 family, with Jason's version fitted with a red dot sight that the site expects is an in-game attachment rather than a fixed part of the weapon.12
No name, just a very recognisable shape
PC Gamer describes the same gun and reaches the same conclusion: clearly modelled on an MP5, no official name attached, seen in the hands of both protagonists during the robbery.3 The MP5's outline is one of the most copied in games, so the identification is safe, but it tells you nothing about how the weapon will be labelled in the wheel or what it will cost.3
It is not the only SMG
GTA 6 clearly has a crowded submachine gun class. Press breakdowns have also picked out a MAC-10 lookalike, boxy with a stubby protruding muzzle, shown wearing the tropical weapon pattern from the Vintage Vice City pre-order pack.31 The Ammu-Nation advert at the back end of Trailer 2 adds roughly a dozen more SMG-shaped weapons on the wall behind the counter, which Insider Gaming reads as Uzi variants with possible MP7, MP9 or TEC-9 designs among them.53 None of those have names either.3
Where the customisation hints come from
The red dot on Jason's gun is the single clearest attachment sighting in either trailer, and it lines up with how the series already works: GTA 5 lets you take firearms to Ammu-Nation for attachments, performance upgrades, liveries and tints.16 Rockstar has separately confirmed weapon patterns as a customisation layer, with the pre-order pack applying a palm tree design inspired by Tommy Vercetti's shirt across most guns.7
Open questions
- The in-game name. Every list currently uses a placeholder such as MP5 SMG.13
- Whether Jason's and Lucia's guns are one weapon with different attachments or two entries.1
- Rate of fire, damage, magazine size and price. None published.4
- How many of the SMGs on the Ammu-Nation wall are actually buyable weapons rather than scenery.35
The real Heckler & Koch MP5
The gun press outlets are matching to Jason and Lucia's SMG is a real submachine gun: the Heckler & Koch MP5, developed in West Germany and introduced in 1966. It fires from a closed bolt using a roller-delayed blowback action, a design that made it noticeably more controllable than the open-bolt SMGs common at the time.11
Its fame dates to 1980, when British SAS operators carried MP5s fitted with torch mounts into the Iranian Embassy siege in London, an operation shown live on television. The publicity pushed police and military units worldwide to buy the gun, and it has since been adopted by more than 40 nations, including Germany's GSG 9, France's GIGN and US Navy SEAL teams.11 That is exactly why an MP5 silhouette is instantly readable in a game trailer, whatever fictional name Rockstar eventually gives it.111
A real MAC-10 sits next to it
The second SMG spotted in press breakdowns, the boxy one with the stubby muzzle worn in the tropical weapon pattern, is matched to the MAC-10, officially the Military Armament Corporation Model 10. Gordon Ingram designed it in 1964 as a small, blowback-operated machine pistol built largely from steel stampings, with a telescoping bolt wrapped around the barrel to keep the whole gun short.312
Chambered in .45 ACP or 9mm, the real MAC-10 fires from an open bolt at a very high rate, over 1,000 rounds per minute in its 9mm form, which is exactly why firearms writers have long joked it is only accurate at phone-booth range. That combination of tiny size and a ferocious fire rate has made it a stock prop in crime fiction for decades, GTA included: a MAC-10 clone was a named weapon back in Vice City, years before this new tropical-patterned sighting.1214
SMGs have never had a fixed name in GTA
Submachine guns change names constantly across the series. GTA III's compact SMG is simply called the Uzi; Vice City renamed the identical slot the Uz-1; GTA Advance used Uz-I; and San Andreas, Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories all settled on Micro SMG, consistently the cheapest and weakest gun in its class.14 Every one of those is modeled on a real Uzi variant, from the compact Micro Uzi to the full-size original, and San Andreas' Micro SMG specifically took over the role Vice City's separate Mac 10 weapon had played, after a planned Uz-1 model was cut from that game's development.14
The HD Universe kept the churn going. GTA IV's SMG is modeled on the MP10, an American-made copy of the MP5; Chinatown Wars and GTA V moved to an MP5A3 basis, credited in GTA V and GTA Online to the fictional manufacturer Hawk & Little.8 The separate Micro SMG in GTA V and Online, made by the equally fictional Shrewsbury, is instead modeled on a Mini Uzi with Picatinny rails borrowed from the more modern Uzi Pro.9 GTA Online later added the Combat PDW, a hybrid design that borrows its bolt and trigger guard from an MP5 but its overall shape from a SIG MPX, sold from Ammu-Nation for $11,750 with the highest per-shot damage of any submachine gun in the game.10
GTA 6 already looks like it favours fictional branding
IGN's rundown of the Extended Look separately identified the Moreland 850 shotgun and a Duke 556 assault rifle, noting that Duke Arms Company is a firearms manufacturer imported from Red Dead Online and reading it as a sign GTA 6 is leaning harder into invented gun brands, the same way it invents car manufacturers.13 That lines up with Hawk & Little, Shrewsbury and Coil already doing the same job for SMGs in GTA V and Online, and it is the strongest reason to expect this MP5 lookalike will surface under a made-up name rather than anything resembling MP5.138
Frequently asked questions
Is the MP5 in GTA 6?
A very close lookalike is. Both Jason and Lucia carry an MP5-pattern submachine gun during the robbery scene in Trailer 2, but Rockstar uses fictional brand names, so the in-game weapon will not be called an MP5.13
Can you put a red dot sight on guns in GTA 6?
It looks that way. Jason's SMG in Trailer 2 has one fitted while Lucia's does not, which GamesRadar reads as an attachment you choose rather than a fixed feature.1
Has an MP5-style gun appeared in GTA before?
Yes, repeatedly. GTA IV's SMG is modeled on the MP10, an American copy of the MP5, and both GTA: Chinatown Wars and GTA V moved to an MP5A3 basis for the same weapon slot, credited to the fictional brand Hawk & Little.8
