GTA 6 bolt action sniper rifle: the hunting gun in Mount Kalaga

GTA 6's first sniper rifles were not found in a shootout. They were found in wildlife screenshots. A close crop of an official image showing hunters moving through Mount Kalaga National Park reveals a long rifle that GamesRadar reads as a Remington 700 style bolt action, and PC Gamer independently reaches the same conclusion.¹²

Three different long guns, three different owners

The Grassrivers screenshots are busier. In one of them a seated poacher has what GamesRadar describes as a Duke Arms Company assault sniper rifle across his lap, identified by the manufacturer logo, while the man standing next to him holds an unidentified carbine.¹ PC Gamer sees a third silhouette in the poacher shots that looks like a Springfield Armory M1A, a semi-automatic battle rifle rather than a bolt action, and guesses it might behave like GTA 5's marksman rifle: faster to fire, weaker per shot.² That is the writer's inference, not a Rockstar statement.²

Bolt action versus everything else

The mechanical distinction matters because Grand Theft Auto has historically kept its sniper rifles slow and punishing, with a manual cycle between shots. GTABase lists a GTA 6 bolt action sniper based on the Remington 700 BDL and marks it as a weapon that can be modified, which in this series usually means scopes, suppressors and finishes bought at Ammu-Nation.³⁵ Those entries are community identifications built from screenshots, not confirmed data.⁴

What the hunting context suggests

Every sniper sighting so far involves hunters or poachers in Leonida's wild areas rather than a mission shootout, which puts the rifles in the same frame as the animals Rockstar has been showing off in Mount Kalaga and the wetlands.¹² Whether hunting is a real activity with its own weapon requirements, or whether these characters are simply set dressing for a region, has not been stated.¹

The Remington 700 in the real world

GamesRadar and PC Gamer's read on the in-game rifle points to the Remington 700, a bolt-action design Remington Arms introduced in 1962 and has since built more than five million of, across over thirty caliber options.⁶¹² Its reputation for accuracy comes from tight machining tolerances in the chamber and bore and a fast lock time that engineer Mike Walker built into the original design, precise enough that the US Marine Corps adapted it into the M40 sniper rifle in 1966 and the Army built its M24 Sniper Weapon System around the same action in 1986.⁶ That dual military-and-civilian pedigree fits a screenshot of hunters in a national park better than it would a battlefield weapon built for nothing but war.⁶¹

The M1A: a battle rifle among hunting guns

The rifle PC Gamer flags among the Grassrivers poachers reads as a Springfield Armory M1A, the semi-automatic civilian version of the M14 that served as the US military's standard infantry rifle from 1957 until it was replaced by the M16 in the late 1960s.⁷² Chambered in the harder-hitting 7.62x51mm NATO round rather than the AR-15's 5.56mm, the M1A trades magazine capacity and controllability for range and stopping power, which lines up with PC Gamer's guess that it would behave like a faster-firing, lower-damage marksman rifle if it ever gets full in-game stats.⁷²

Where sniper rifles have sat in GTA's economy

There is no confirmed GTA 6 price or unlock rank for any of the three rifles, but GTA 5's sniper class gives a sense of what usually comes with the territory: every sniper rifle is sold through Ammu-Nation with attachment, livery and tint options, and select entries can be pushed further into an Mk II variant with extra ammo types through a Weapon Workshop or Agency Armory.⁵ GTABase's own GTA 6 entry for the bolt action sniper already describes it as customizable with attachments and tints, consistent with that pattern, though its stats are still listed as not yet available.³ The database also flags the rifle as new to the series rather than a returning weapon, which if accurate would make it one of the few confirmed additions to the sniper class rather than a reskin of an existing GTA 5 gun.³

Why three different guns show up with three different people

The spread itself is a small tell. A bolt-action hunting rifle carried by licensed-looking hunters, a branded Duke Arms rifle across a seated poacher's lap, and an unbranded M1A-style rifle held by the man standing next to him reads like Rockstar drawing a line between legitimate and illegitimate use of similar hardware in the same region, rather than reusing one asset for every character in the wilderness.¹ Whether that distinction plays out mechanically, for example a hunting-flagged rifle that behaves differently from a combat one, is exactly the kind of system-level detail Rockstar has not addressed for any weapon yet.¹ It also fits the broader pattern GTA 6 has shown with rifles elsewhere: the Duke Arms brand keeps resurfacing on both a carbine Jason aims in a standoff and a sniper sitting across a poacher's lap, suggesting one manufacturer is meant to feel present across very different corners of Leonida rather than being reserved for a single mission or character.¹
