GTA 6 pump action shotgun: Lucia's one-handed reload explained
Lucia fires and reloads a pump shotgun one-handed in the Extended Look. What the weapon is, and how the series has handled pump guns before
The pump action shotgun got the flashiest weapon moment in the whole Extended Look. In a montage sequence Lucia walks through a wrecked building carrying bags in one hand, fires the shotgun with the other, throws it up in the air to rack the pump, catches it and fires again.12
Why that animation matters
Engadget describes the same moment, tossing the gun, racking it and catching it back, and frames it as one of the show-off touches in Rockstar's animation work rather than a new mechanic.3 It does tell you something useful though: GTA 6 is animating weapons contextually, so what your hands are already carrying changes how a reload looks. That is a step on from GTA 5, where reload animations were fixed per weapon.31
A very old GTA weapon with a new coat
The pump shotgun is close to a permanent fixture in this series. GTABase traces the line back through GTA III and San Andreas, where it was simply the Shotgun, Vice City where it was the Chrome Shotgun, and GTA IV and GTA V where it settled into Pump Shotgun.4 Its database entry lists the GTA 6 version under the Shrewsbury brand and modelled on a Mossberg 590, but those details are carried across from the GTA 5 weapon rather than read off anything visible in GTA 6 footage.45
Two pump guns, not one
This is a separate sighting from the Moreland 850 that Jason picks up in the stash house raid, and GamesRadar lists them as two entries.1 Whether they are genuinely two weapons, or one base shotgun with different furniture, is the same question hanging over most of the GTA 6 arsenal. Nothing in the Extended Look answers it.1
What is not confirmed
- The in-game name of Lucia's shotgun. It has no visible maker's mark.1
- Whether the one-handed reload is a general behaviour or specific to that scripted moment.13
- Damage, spread, capacity and price. None published.5
- Whether the shotgun is customisable at Ammu-Nation and with what.5
IGN saw the same reload and read it as a system, not a stunt
IGN's Extended Look rundown independently calls out the exact same moment: Lucia reloading a shotgun one-handed while carrying a bag, which the outlet frames as evidence of separate reload animations for characters whose hands are already full.8 That reading matters, because it suggests the toss-rack-catch flourish is one example of a broader animation system responding to what a character is carrying, rather than a one-off cutscene flourish built for this specific montage.83
The real Mossberg 500 and 590 family
The gun GTABase matches this shotgun to, the Mossberg 590, is a military-rated member of the Mossberg 500 series, a pump-action shotgun line designed by Carl Benson in 1961 that has since sold more than 11 million units to hunters and police.6 The original 500 failed US military testing in the 1970s, so Mossberg spent the 1980s reworking it, adding a thicker barrel, extended magazine and bayonet lug, and released the result as the M590 in 1987. The upgraded M590A1 went on to become a standard-issue shotgun across the US military.6 That military pedigree is very likely why the Mossberg 590 keeps getting cited as the template for combat-ready pump shotguns in games, GTA included.64
Pump shotguns have never stayed the same gun in GTA
GTA Wiki's dedicated Pump Shotgun page shows how much the weapon has changed shape release to release. In GTA IV it is modeled on an Ithaca Model 37 Stakeout, itself based on an airsoft replica of a Remington 870; by GTA V and Online it had switched to a Mossberg 590 profile fitted with an AR-15-style pistol grip housing and a Magpul MOE stock borrowed from the M4 rifle family, credited to the fictional manufacturer Shrewsbury.7 Chinatown Wars simply called its version the Shotgun.7 None of that guarantees what GTA 6's version will be modeled on, but it does show Rockstar redesigning this exact weapon slot with almost every new engine generation, which makes the Extended Look sighting look like the expected next redesign rather than an unusual addition.7
How the GTA IV and GTA V versions actually played
Performance data on GTA Wiki shows how differently this weapon has behaved release to release. In GTA IV, working the pump took roughly 1.5 seconds, but the payoff was a near-guaranteed one-hit kill at close range against any target, even a fully armoured one, with an eight-shell capacity.7 By GTA V and Online, Rockstar rebalanced it into a more standard, lower-fire-rate close-range weapon with good damage but short range, the profile that made it a strong early-game pickup that was easily outclassed later by other shotguns. Its only attachment options in that generation were a flashlight and a suppressor, reflecting its role as the baseline, standard-issue shotgun rather than a heavily moddable one.7 The base weapon unlocks at rank 17 in GTA Online, with the flashlight following one rank later, which underlines how early and ordinary a pickup it has always been rather than an end-game option.7
What would settle the open questions
- A weapon-wheel entry or menu screenshot showing the shotgun's real name, which would resolve whether it is a distinct gun or a reskinned Moreland 850.1
- Gameplay footage of Jason performing the same toss-rack-catch reload while unencumbered, which would show whether it is tied to carrying items or is a universal animation.8
- A strategy guide, weapons.meta leak or official statement confirming capacity, damage and Ammu-Nation price.5
Frequently asked questions
Can you reload one-handed in GTA 6?
Lucia does it in the Extended Look while carrying bags in her other hand, tossing the shotgun up to rack it before catching it. Whether that is a general mechanic or a set-piece animation has not been confirmed.13
Is the pump shotgun returning in GTA 6?
A pump action shotgun is clearly in the game, and the weapon has appeared in every mainline Grand Theft Auto since GTA III under names including Chrome Shotgun and Pump Shotgun.14
Did more than one outlet notice the one-handed reload?
Yes. GamesRadar and IGN both singled out the same moment, with IGN specifically framing it as part of a system of reload animations that change when a character's hands are already full, rather than a one-time cutscene trick.18
What is the Mossberg 590 that this shotgun is compared to?
It is a military-rated pump-action shotgun Mossberg developed in 1987 after its original Model 500 failed US military testing. The upgraded M590A1 became a standard shotgun across the US armed forces, which is likely why the design keeps turning up as a template for combat shotguns in games.6
