GTA 6 Molotov: the firebomb Lucia uses to destroy evidence

The Molotov is the oldest weapon on this list by some distance, and it made its Grand Theft Auto VI debut in the Extended Look. After Lucia helps Raul Bautista get away from the police, she destroys the evidence by pulling out a Molotov and torching the getaway car.¹²

Why the scene is worth noting

It is one of the few moments in the presentation where a weapon is used for something other than shooting a person. Burning a car to remove evidence points at GTA 6 caring about what you leave behind after a job, which fits alongside the other systems Rockstar showed off, such as the wanted level behaviour and stolen goods being fenced.¹² Rockstar has not explained whether destroying a vehicle actually reduces heat, so treat the cause and effect as unconfirmed.¹

A weapon with a very long record

GTABase traces the Molotov through the entire series: Molotov Cocktail in GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA IV, shortened to Molotov in GTA 5, and appearing in Red Dead Redemption 2 as the Fire Bottle.³ Its GTA 6 entry is filed under thrown weapons and marked as a weapon that cannot be modified, which matches how the item has always worked.³ Community databases also list a separate Fire Bottle entry for GTA 6, which may be a duplicate rather than a second item.⁴

How throwables fit in

Thrown weapons form their own category in Grand Theft Auto, sitting apart from firearms in the weapon wheel, and community lists for GTA 6 also include grenades, smoke grenades and flashbangs.⁴ Only the Molotov has actually been seen in official footage so far, so the rest of that list should be treated as unverified.⁴ The Extended Look showed a familiar weapon wheel in use during play, but Rockstar has not shown how the throwable section is laid out.⁵

What is not confirmed

• How many Molotovs you can carry, and where you buy them. Nothing published.³⁴
• Whether burning a vehicle affects the wanted system or evidence in any measurable way.¹
• Whether the fire spreads or damages the environment beyond the target.¹
• Which other throwables actually make the final game.⁴

The real weapon behind it

Unlike almost everything else on this list, the Molotov is not a stand-in for a manufactured firearm; it is an improvised weapon with a documented real history. Petrol-filled bottles were first used against tanks in the Spanish Civil War of the mid-to-late 1930s, but the name comes from the Winter War of 1939 to 1940, when Finnish soldiers threw them at invading Soviet armour.⁶ The name itself was a joke at Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov's expense: Moscow's propaganda had described its bombing raids on Finland as humanitarian food deliveries, so Finnish troops called the incendiary cluster bombs Molotov bread baskets and the hand-thrown bottles a drink to go with them.⁶ A basic build is still just a glass bottle of flammable liquid with a cloth wick stuffed in the neck, lit before the throw, which is close to how Grand Theft Auto has always animated the weapon.⁶

History of this class in the GTA series

GTA Wiki lists the Molotov Cocktail in every mainline entry back to GTA 2, including GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, IV, V and Online, which makes it one of the longest-serving items in the franchise regardless of console generation.⁷ The bottle itself has been redesigned almost every time: a plain green bottle with a beige label in the GTA III and Vice City era, a plainer brown bottle in San Andreas, a bottle carrying a fictional Cherenkov Vodka label in GTA IV, and a fictional Logger Beer label with a shorter rag in GTA V and Online.⁷ In GTA V and Online the weapon burns roughly a two-metre radius for about 20 seconds and can ignite a target up to four metres from the impact point, giving a rough sense of scale for how the item has behaved mechanically in the most recent games.⁷

It is also one of the cheapest weapons in the series to make sense of narratively: unlike a firearm, nobody needs to explain where two people fleeing a robbery obtained it, which is probably part of why Rockstar reaches for it in a getaway scene instead of a gunfight. That framing lines up with how the item has always been pitched in Grand Theft Auto, as a cheap, crude, improvised tool rather than a precision weapon, and the Extended Look's use of it to burn evidence rather than kill anyone keeps that character intact.¹²

What we expect in GTA 6

Expectation, not confirmation: given an unbroken run across every mainline title, a Molotov showing up in the Extended Look is closer to the series continuing a habit than a new addition, and it would be a mild surprise if the finished game dropped it.⁷ What its GTA 6 bottle looks like, and whether Rockstar redesigns the label again the way it has almost every generation, is not something the Extended Look settled either way.¹²

What is unknown and what would confirm it

• The GTA 6 bottle's exact look and label design. Nothing beyond the moment in the Extended Look has been shown; a weapon wheel screenshot or strategy guide would settle it.¹²
