GTA 6 melee weapons: every bat, blade and blunt object spotted

Baseball bats, pool cues, hammers, a switchblade and a stiletto heel. Every GTA 6 melee weapon seen so far, and why the list is still shaky

Melee is the weakest-evidenced corner of the Grand Theft Auto VI arsenal, and it is worth saying so up front. PC Gamer deliberately left melee weapons out of its GTA 6 gun list because it is hard to judge which objects you will actually be able to pick up and swing.7 Everything below is an object seen on screen, not a confirmed weapon wheel entry.71

The baseball bat

The strongest candidate is the baseball bat. GamesRadar found one in an official screenshot of a couple of characters in the seedy Port Gellhorn area, with one of them holding the bat, and community databases file that same Port Gellhorn image under their GTA 6 baseball bat entry.14 The bat has appeared as a melee weapon in every mainline Grand Theft Auto from GTA III onwards, so its return would be about as safe a bet as this series offers.4

Pool cues, clubs and hammers

A screenshot of Jason and Cal Hampton playing pool in a bar puts a pool cue in frame, and another shows Cal brandishing a minigolf club on a round of crazy golf.1 Community databases list the pool cue among GTA 6 melee weapons and trace it back through GTA Online, GTA IV and San Andreas.5 From the first trailer, a sequence of social media clips shows a woman armed with a pair of hammers, another tool that has served as a melee weapon in earlier games.12 In each case GamesRadar is explicit that it is describing something likely rather than confirmed.1

The switchblade

A switchblade knife is visible in the Ultimate Edition artwork alongside the personalised Morgan revolvers, and GamesRadar reads it as a melee weapon that comes with the package.1 The official editions page does not name a knife among the Ultimate Edition contents, so whether it is bonus content or simply set dressing in the art is unresolved.81

Contextual melee in the Extended Look

The Extended Look added a different kind of melee. KeenGamer describes Lucia in close-quarters combat using contextual button prompts, including an option involving a discarded stiletto heel.6 That suggests GTA 6 may hand you improvised weapons from the environment during a fight rather than only from a weapon wheel, but Rockstar has not described the system.6

What is not confirmed

  • Whether any of these objects is a real, carryable melee weapon.71
  • Damage, swing speed or any other statistic. Nothing published for melee at all.3
  • Whether the switchblade is Ultimate Edition content or artwork dressing.18
  • How contextual environmental melee works and when it is offered.6
Not yet confirmed: the GTA 6 melee weapon list. Every entry here is an object photographed in official material, not a weapon Rockstar has confirmed you can equip.

History of this class in the GTA series

Melee has grown a lot since the series started. GTA Wiki names the baseball bat as the most common melee weapon across the franchise, present as far back as GTA III, before Vice City did the heavy lifting and added the knife, machete, katana, chainsaw, hammer, golf club and nightstick in a single game, more than doubling the category overnight.9 San Andreas kept building on that with the pool cue and, in a quirk unique to that game, a Gifts category of items like flowers and a cane that doubled as improvised weapons.9 GTA V and Online added a further round of options including a crowbar, a hatchet, a stone hatchet, a battle axe and an antique cavalry dagger, which is the trend line the GTA 6 sightings so far, a bat, a pool cue, a golf club, hammers and a switchblade, would be extending rather than breaking.91

What we expect in GTA 6

Expectation, not confirmation: given that every one of GTA 6's melee sightings so far, the bat, the pool cue, the minigolf club, the hammers, matches an object that has already been a usable weapon in a previous game, the safest guess is that Rockstar is continuing the same category rather than reinventing it.91 The stiletto-heel prompt in the Extended Look is the one genuinely new-looking wrinkle, since it points toward objects being handed to you contextually inside a fight rather than picked from a menu, which would be a meaningful change in how melee is offered even if the underlying object pool stays familiar.6 That distinction between old objects and a possibly new delivery system is worth holding onto; it is an interpretation of one gameplay clip, not a confirmed mechanic.6

The switchblade spotted in the Ultimate Edition artwork also has series precedent worth noting: a knife has been available in every Grand Theft Auto game since Vice City, most often as a fast, quiet option rather than a heavy hitter, and several entries have let it double as a stealth takedown tool.91 If the GTA 6 switchblade follows that pattern, it would likely trade damage for speed and a quieter approach rather than functioning as a showpiece weapon, though that is inference from history rather than anything shown on screen.9

What is unknown and what would confirm it

  • Whether any specific object seen so far is a genuine weapon-wheel entry rather than set dressing. A gameplay trailer showing it equipped and swung would confirm it.71
  • Whether the contextual stiletto-heel style pickup is a general combat system or a one-off scripted beat. A second unscripted example, or a strategy guide, would settle it.6
  • Damage, swing speed, or any other figure for any melee object. No footage has shown a HUD or stats screen for melee at all.3

Frequently asked questions

What melee weapons are in GTA 6?

None have been confirmed. Official material has shown a baseball bat in Port Gellhorn, a pool cue, a minigolf club, hammers in Trailer 1 and a switchblade in the Ultimate Edition art, but Rockstar has not listed any of them as usable weapons.17

Can you use objects from the environment as weapons in GTA 6?

It looks possible. The Extended Look shows Lucia getting a contextual prompt involving a discarded stiletto heel during a close-quarters fight, though the system behind it has not been explained.6

How has GTA's melee weapon list grown over the years?

It started small in GTA III with mostly the baseball bat, then Vice City added the knife, machete, katana, chainsaw, hammer, golf club and nightstick in one go. San Andreas added the pool cue and a novelty Gifts category, and GTA V and Online added a crowbar, hatchets, a battle axe and a cavalry dagger.9

Is the GTA 6 melee list likely to be bigger or smaller than GTA V's?

Unknown, but every object spotted in GTA 6 material so far, the bat, pool cue, golf club, hammers and switchblade, has a direct precedent in earlier games, so there is no sign of the category shrinking.91

Can enemies see you carrying a melee weapon differently than a gun?

Not stated. Rockstar has not described whether melee weapons affect NPC reactions or the wanted system differently from firearms in GTA 6.1
