GTA 6 map vs GTA 5 map: how much bigger Leonida really is
Rockstar has given real comparisons: twice GTA 5, three times Red Dead Redemption 2. Here is what has been said and what has not.
For nearly three years the only honest answer to this question was "nobody knows". That changed in late August 2026, when Rockstar North's head of development Rob Nelson gave journalists visiting the studio a set of direct comparisons.1
The numbers Rockstar actually gave
Nelson said the Grand Theft Auto VI world is roughly twice the size of GTA V's and around three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. He also broke out the cities: Vice City is twice the size of Los Santos, and once you include the surrounding suburbs, the Vice City area is eleven times larger than Los Santos and its surroundings.1
That last figure is the one worth sitting with. It says the difference is not mainly about how far you can drive, it is about how much of the map is dense, built-up, walkable city rather than open country. GTA V's Los Santos was a city with a very large amount of empty land around it.1
What Rockstar has not said
No square kilometre or square mile figure, no map dimensions, and no comparison to fan-measured GTA V numbers. Every precise area figure circulating for GTA VI comes from leaked material or from fans measuring trailer footage, and none of it is confirmed. We do not treat those figures as fact on this site.1
What the map is made of
Rockstar's official site names six areas to explore across the state of Leonida: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. That structure, a single flagship city plus five distinct outlying regions, is a meaningful change from GTA V's one city, one desert and one mountain.34
Size is not the same as density
The more useful comparison may not be area at all. Rockstar has said Grand Theft Auto VI has well over ten times GTA V's animation count, and told press it built new tools and pipelines to create the most detailed and varied character population it has ever made, with NPCs varying in age, height, body type, tattoos, piercings and clothing. The studio also says it spent years researching on the ground in Miami and the surrounding area, and brought in more than fifty real street artists to design in-game murals.5
A world twice the size of GTA V's with ten times the animation work is a much larger jump than the area figure alone suggests, and it explains a 30fps target on current consoles better than any map measurement does.52
How to weigh these comparisons
Rob Nelson's figures came from a studio visit in which he played roughly two and a half hours in front of a visiting creator, who had already seen the Extended Look and could ask follow-up questions. That is a good sourcing situation by pre-release standards: a named senior developer, a specific setting, and multiple outlets reporting consistently. It is still a developer speaking in round multiples rather than a measured figure.1
Treat "twice GTA V" and "three times Red Dead Redemption 2" as Rockstar's own characterisation of scale, not as arithmetic you can convert into square kilometres. Rockstar did not say whether water, interiors or unreachable terrain are counted, and those choices move the number substantially.1
The comparison that will actually matter
For most players, travel time will say more than area. GTA V's map felt large partly because the drive from Los Santos to Paleto Bay took real minutes across mostly empty road. A world twice that size but eleven times denser in its urban core is a different experience of size: less driving through nothing, more turning a corner into something. Nobody outside Rockstar can confirm how that feels until launch.12
The community numbers you will see elsewhere, and why we do not use them
Community-sourced, low confidence, included here only because readers actively search for it: fan mapping projects that stitch together trailer footage, screenshots and leaked material have produced estimates putting Leonida at roughly 118 to 132 square miles, against a commonly cited GTA V figure of about 49 square miles. That would put the ratio in a similar range to Rockstar's own "roughly twice" characterisation, which is one reason these projects get repeated as if they were confirmation. They are not. They rely partly on leaked footage Rockstar never authorised, they disagree with each other by double-digit percentages, and no square-mile figure has ever come from Rockstar itself.67
Common misconceptions about the map, debunked
- "Rockstar confirmed the map is X square miles." No; every specific area figure in circulation is a fan estimate or leak.1
- "Twice the size means twice the driving distance." Not necessarily; Rockstar's own framing emphasises density in the city core over raw distance.12
- "The 2022 leaked map is accurate to the finished game." Unverifiable; that material predates years of further development and was never meant for release.1
Practical checklist for judging any map-size claim you see
- Check whether the claim traces to a named Rockstar developer speaking on the record, like Rob Nelson's studio-visit comments, or to a fan project1
- Treat any square-mile or square-kilometre figure as unconfirmed until Rockstar publishes one directly
- Remember that "bigger" and "denser" are different claims; Rockstar has emphasised both separately15
There is also a quieter reason to be cautious about any square-mile figure even if one eventually leaks accurately: Rockstar's own comparisons already mix two different kinds of measurement, overall world size and city density, without saying whether either includes water, vertical space, or areas that exist but are not meant to be freely explorable. A single area number, however precise it looks, would flatten distinctions Rockstar has gone out of its way to describe separately.
The most defensible summary, based only on what Rockstar has actually said, is this: a substantially larger world than GTA V's, built around a noticeably denser flagship city, with five additional named regions giving the state real variety rather than filler terrain around one location. Anything more specific than that is either Rockstar's own round-number characterisation or someone else's estimate.
