GTA 6 wildlife and animals: every creature seen so far

Alligators, a cougar, sea turtles, dolphins and a very confident iguana. What Rockstar's own screenshots and footage actually show.

Rockstar has not published an animal list, but its own screenshots and their captions on the Only in Leonida page are unusually specific, and the Extended Look adds more. Together they give a solid, verifiable picture of what lives in Leonida13.

Grassrivers: gators and worse

Rockstar's description of Grassrivers calls the gators its most famous attraction while warning of deadlier predators and stranger discoveries among the mangroves1. Official screenshots on that page show an airboat surrounded by alligators with a passenger aiming at the nearest one, a hunting party posing with a dead alligator and a wildcat, and a police pursuit through swamp water with gators in it1.

Mount Kalaga: big game country

The national park is where Rockstar puts the hunting. One official screenshot shows a cougar stalking a herd of deer drinking from a stream, and the region description lists hunting and fishing as things you go there to do1.

The Keys and the water

The Leonida Keys cover the marine side. Rockstar's screenshots show two scuba divers underwater among coral, fish, an eel and a sea turtle, and its Ultimate Edition material shows Jason and Lucia on a boat deck with dolphins swimming alongside12. A separate Keys screenshot features an iguana strolling past a mobility scooter, which is about as Leonida as it gets1.

Animals as a system

The Extended Look shows Jason meeting a dog and getting a menu of options to pet, scold or study it, which is the clearest confirmation that animals are interactive rather than scenery3. Preview reporting adds that species in the wild and at a fully explorable zoo can be studied and added to a checklist in the style of Red Dead Redemption 2, that dogs can be fed treats bought from convenience stores, and that asking an owner's permission before petting their dog produces different reactions4.

Fishing and hunting both appear in preview lists of open-world activities, alongside scuba diving and underwater shipwreck exploration, so the wildlife is tied to things you do rather than just things you see4.

Not confirmed: a species count, a full bestiary, sharks as a threat, or any animal not visible in official material. We only list what appears in Rockstar's own screenshots and footage.

How wildlife is spread across the map

The regions carry different animals, which is one of the clearest signs Rockstar built Leonida as distinct biomes rather than one landscape with weather variations. Grassrivers is reptiles and wetland predators, Mount Kalaga is deer and big cats, the Keys are marine, and Vice City itself is mostly dogs, pigeons and the occasional out-of-place iguana1.

That distribution ties directly to activities. Hunting and fishing are listed in Rockstar's Mount Kalaga description, official Grassrivers screenshots show hunting parties on airboats, and the Keys imagery centres on diving1. If you want a specific animal, the region descriptions are the best available guide to where to look1.

What to be sceptical about

Animal lists for GTA VI circulate widely and most of them are inflated. Some entries come from the 2022 development material, some are extrapolated from real Florida fauna, and some are simply invented for engagement. Rockstar has published no bestiary, no species count and no confirmation of any predator beyond what its own screenshots show12.

Our list stays short on purpose. Every animal named on this page is visible in official Rockstar imagery or footage, and the interaction systems described are labelled as preview reporting rather than confirmation134.

What the real wetland's alligators actually do

The gators in Grassrivers are set dressing for now, but the real ecosystem they echo gives the animal more weight than "famous attraction" suggests. In the real Everglades, alligators are a keystone species: they dig depressions that hold water through the dry season, and those gator holes become a refuge that wading birds, fish and turtles depend on to survive droughts5. Rockstar's own warning that there are "far deadlier predators and weirder discoveries among the mangroves" than the alligators makes more sense read against that real ecology, where the gator is the visible, photogenic top of a much larger and stranger wetland food web15.

Why a wetland needs different vehicles than a city

The real Everglades functions as a shallow, slow-moving sheet of water rather than a river with banks, which is why airboats, flat-bottomed and propeller-driven, became the standard way to cross it instead of any boat with a keel5. That geography explains a design choice rather than just flavouring it: Grassrivers' airboats and its wildlife are the same decision, made twice, because a wetland dictates its own vehicle roster the way a city dictates its own traffic.

The real reef the Keys diving is echoing

Rockstar's underwater screenshot of coral, fish, an eel and a sea turtle sits on solid real-world ground. The real Florida Keys run their economy substantially on fishing and ecotourism, with diving in protected coastal waters as a major draw, which is the same combination of marine life and recreation the in-game screenshot is built from6. It is one more example of Leonida assembling a real activity, real fauna and a real economic reason for both to exist together, rather than placing an animal somewhere for its own sake.

How wildlife fits Rockstar's own track record

GTA V is useful context here too. Its original 2013 release had a modest wildlife set, and the 2014 current-generation re-release specifically added new wildlife and vegetation as a headline enhancement, alongside denser traffic and upgraded weather7. That shows Rockstar treating animal density as a marker of a more finished, more detailed world, which lines up with how much space GTA VI's official screenshots and the Extended Look give to wildlife well before launch, rather than leaving it as a post-launch polish item7.

None of this upgrades our confidence rating on unconfirmed species. It only explains why the confirmed ones look the way they do: an alligator that matters ecologically, a reef worth diving, and a wetland that dictates the vehicle you use to see it. Read the region descriptions with that logic and most of the animal placement in Leonida stops looking decorative.

Frequently asked questions

Are there alligators in GTA 6?

Yes. Rockstar's own Grassrivers description calls them the region's most famous attraction, and several official screenshots show them1.

Can you pet dogs in GTA 6?

Yes. The Extended Look shows a prompt offering pet, scold and study options when Jason meets a dog3.

Are there sharks in GTA 6?

Not confirmed. Official underwater screenshots show coral, fish, an eel and a sea turtle, and Rockstar warns of dangerous water without naming what is in it1.

Can you hunt in GTA 6?

Rockstar's Mount Kalaga description lists hunting and fishing, and official Grassrivers screenshots show a hunting party1.

Is there an animal compendium?

Previews describe studying species and adding them to a checklist, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar has not confirmed this itself4.

Why do alligators matter beyond being a hazard?

In the real wetland Grassrivers echoes, alligators dig water holes that sustain other wildlife through the dry season, a real ecological role behind the in-game 'famous attraction' framing5.

Did GTA 5 have this much wildlife at launch?

Less. Its 2014 current-generation re-release specifically added new wildlife and vegetation as an enhancement over the original 2013 version7.

Is diving realistic to the real Florida Keys?

Yes in spirit. The real Keys run substantially on fishing and ecotourism, including diving in protected waters, matching the underwater screenshot Rockstar published6.
