GTA 6 Edge magazine preview: every new detail from Rockstar North's unscripted 90-minute demo
Edge watched Rob Nelson play GTA 6 unscripted for 90 minutes. Map scale, interiors, weather, police, fuel, buses and the Criminal Profile, explained
In the final weeks before launch, Rockstar North let Edge magazine into its Edinburgh studio and did something it has avoided for every previous Grand Theft Auto: no script. Co-studio head Rob Nelson simply played the current build of Grand Theft Auto VI for about 90 minutes while the writer watched, and the cover story went free online on October 29 alongside Edge issue 430.1 Nelson, fellow head of development Aaron Garbut and stability lead Phil Hooker all spoke on the record.1 These are the details that are new.
The map: bigger than the old comparison suggested
Rockstar repeated that Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA V's map, then added a second comparison: its total landmass, Vice City and the surrounding areas included, is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 put together.1 The studio has still not given a square-mile figure, and coverage pointed out that it is unclear exactly how the comparison was measured.2
Garbut put more weight on density than on acreage. He told Edge the game has an order of magnitude more interiors than earlier entries, with homes dressed to show the lives of the people who live in them, and that after years of play he still runs into buildings he has not seen.1 Notebookcheck also read the feature as confirming that most of Leonida can be explored from day one, without missions unlocking distant areas.2

Living streets and a slower clock
Rockstar built a Los Angeles team of writers, directors and producers just for pedestrians, and says the population draws on around 600,000 animations.1 People are given traits such as temperament and aggression, and they react to what they have seen you do: carrying a shotgun in your hands is enough to make a crowd back away, while one slung over your back draws less attention.1 Roads have been made narrower than GTA V's to feel more believable, and the day-night cycle runs considerably longer, because GTA V's timing felt too fast at this level of detail.1
Weather is no longer a set of preset states. Clouds move with wind, humidity, time of day and season, so you can watch a storm build on the horizon, drive into it, and see streets stay wet and buildings drip afterwards.1 Wind moves trees and waves, changes how boats handle in open water, and can buffet aircraft hard enough to cause light damage in bad storms.1
Police, cars and the Criminal Profile
- The heat system shows what the police know as icons on screen: your description, clothing, weapon, CCTV footage and whether two people were seen. Splitting up, changing clothes or dropping the weapon removes those clues.1
- Police lay stinger strips ahead of a chase and send K9 units after suspects on foot.1
- Some drivers flee when you steal their car, others are armed and fight back, and newer cars may carry trackers.1
- Every vehicle has a fuel gauge and an engine health readout.1
- A Scooter Bros phone app delivers your own car for a small fee, and your weapons are kept in its trunk.1
- A WAINK app lists cars wanted by fences, with security and tracking details; payment depends on the condition the car arrives in.1
- Buses and trains run on full working routes across Leonida.1
The Criminal Profile tracks Jason and Lucia on a scale from Professional to Irredeemable, shown with angel and devil icons, and Rockstar says it will shape how the story plays out.1 You can knock enemies out or intimidate them instead of killing them.1 The couple's closeness is measured on a four-point scale that rises as they spend time together, through beach walks, the gym or simply driving around. Nelson would not say whether they can marry.1 Between story missions there is now some natural gating: sometimes the pair must raise money, through a robbery or a car for a fence, before the next job opens.1
What Rockstar said about launch
Garbut said the team did not compromise on scale, detail or story and compared finishing the game to building a pyramid on Everest. Hooker said the team made what it wanted to make, and Nelson described the build as ready.1 Nothing in the feature changes the release: Grand Theft Auto VI is still due November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.3
Frequently asked questions
How big is the GTA 6 map according to Edge?
Rockstar told Edge the map is roughly twice GTA V's, with a total landmass nearly that of GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined.1
Did Edge play GTA 6?
No. Rob Nelson played the current build unscripted for about 90 minutes while Edge watched in his office.1
Does GTA 6 have fuel?
Yes. Every vehicle has a fuel gauge and an engine health readout, though Rockstar says cars go a long way before running low.1
Can Jason and Lucia get married?
Rockstar will not say. Nelson refused to confirm or deny it, but their closeness is tracked on a four-point scale.1
