GTA 6 runs at 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X at launch
After the Extended Look, Rockstar confirmed GTA 6 ships at 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X, with no performance mode planned for launch
The Extended Look answered a question two trailers had dodged. The footage, captured on the PlayStation 5 version, ran at 30fps, and Rockstar confirmed afterwards that this is how the game will ship in November on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.1
Rob Nelson, co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar North, told Brazilian outlet Flow Games, during a hands-off demo session at the studio's Edinburgh offices, that the build's current 30fps baseline applies across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PS5 Pro alike. Asked whether a 60fps mode could be offered at launch or added afterward, Nelson said that would need confirmation from the technical team, and stressed that the performance state of the current build does not mean performance modes for the final launch version have already been decided.4
In line with Rockstar's history
This is not a surprise if you have followed the studio. Red Dead Redemption 2 never received a 60fps console update, and Grand Theft Auto V only got one years into its life with the current-generation re-release.1
Rockstar's own capture claim is consistent: both the Extended Look and Trailer 2 were captured in-game on a PlayStation 5, and the official site carries a Plays Best On PlayStation 5 line.23
How the press reacted
Coverage of the reveal was less concerned with the frame rate itself than with what it implied about the PC version to come. PC Gamer's response to the same footage was less about disappointment and more about anticipation, noting how much visual work Rockstar had extracted from a PS5 running at 30fps and treating that as a sign of how much further an eventual, unannounced PC release could push the same world once unlocked from console-class hardware.5
Other outlets covering the same comments focused on what Nelson did not rule out rather than what he confirmed: nothing in his answer excluded a post-launch patch, and the framing of more options may be added later left the door open without committing Rockstar to a timeline or even to a specific feature. That distinction, between a confirmed 30fps launch state and an unconfirmed but not denied higher-framerate future, is the detail most follow-up coverage tried to nail down without success.14
Why 30fps still generates this much coverage
By 2026, a 30fps-only launch on current-generation consoles is unusual enough among big-budget releases that it became a story in its own right rather than a footnote to the Extended Look's other reveals. Competing open-world titles on the same hardware generation have increasingly shipped with a performance mode as standard, which is part of why Rockstar confirming the opposite, at least for launch, drew as much coverage as some of the footage itself.1
What this does and doesn't tell us about visuals
The 30fps figure is specifically a frame-rate number, not a resolution or ray-tracing claim; Nelson's comments to Flow Games did not touch on either of those, and Rockstar has not published resolution targets for any platform.4 The visual density that prompted PC Gamer's reaction, dense foliage, crowd density and lighting detail sustained across a long, continuous take, is a separate claim from the frame rate, and outlets covering the Extended Look generally treated the two as connected trade-offs rather than confirming a direct cause and effect.5
Frequently asked questions
Is GTA 6 60fps on console?
No. It launches at 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X, with no performance mode confirmed for release.1
Did Rockstar rule out a 60fps mode later?
No. Rob Nelson said the current build's 30fps state does not mean performance modes for the launch version are finalised, without confirming one either.4
