GTA 6 easter egg: the NINE1NINE plane banner and Miami's real E11EVEN club
The seaplane banner over Vice Beach in Trailer 1 parodies Miami club E11EVEN so closely that the real club answered with its own banner
In the beach sequence of Trailer 1 a small seaplane drags an advertising banner across the sky reading "Why sixty nine when you can NINE 1 NINE". It is a two-layer joke: it is a crude Grand Theft Auto gag, and it is also a very precise recreation of how one particular Miami nightclub actually markets itself13.
The real advertising tactic behind the joke
Banner-towing planes are a genuine, decades-old fixture of Florida beach advertising. Operators fly small aircraft trailing printed banners at roughly 500 feet over beaches and around 1,000 feet over downtown corridors, a format that has run out of South Florida airfields for well over 20 years and remains one of the most recognizable ways a Miami business can reach a captive beach crowd7.
Rockstar did not invent the idea of a Florida business buying sky space over sunbathers, it copied a real local marketing habit and slotted a fictional client into it. That is why the gag reads as more than a name change: the delivery mechanism itself is authentic to Miami37.
The real club
NINE1NINE is a rendition of E11EVEN Miami, the 24-hour club at 29 NE 11th Street in Downtown Miami, which is known locally for hiring planes to tow banner adverts over Miami Beach3. Rockstar copied the number-name format, the aerial advertising and the tone in one go3.
E11EVEN's own history
E11EVEN Miami opened to the public on February 5, 2014, in the city's Park West district, built as a 24-hour "ultraclub" hybrid of a nightclub and a strip club by cofounder Marc Roberts9. It grew into one of Miami's most recognizable nightlife brands well before Grand Theft Auto VI existed, known locally in no small part for exactly the kind of aerial banner campaigns the game parodied8.
That existing reputation is part of why the parody landed so cleanly. Rockstar was not spoofing a generic club, it was spoofing a venue whose own marketing already leaned on banner planes as a signature move, which is also why the club had a ready-made way to answer in kind68.
The club actually answered
This is the rare easter egg where the target replied. On 19 December 2023 E11EVEN flew its own banner over Miami Beach reading "WHEN NINE 1 NINE = E11EVEN" and released a video of it, which passed a million views45. It is one of the few documented cases of a real business publicly acknowledging its own Grand Theft Auto parody5.
E11EVEN's marketing director, Eddie Franco, said the team moved fast once the trailer went up: "I quickly called the fly-banner company and flew it the next day." He also confirmed the club's banners are not a one-off marketing stunt, saying "we fly the banners weekly" as a normal part of its promotion, and called the whole exchange "just a staple in beach cities"6.
Where it appears in Trailer 2
Trailer 2 goes inside. Jason and Lucia are shown in the NINE1NINE club at roughly 1:40, 1:53 and 2:05, in scenes of the pair dancing on a packed floor, which places the venue in Downtown Vice City rather than on the beach where the banner flew23.
Why the banner is the better joke
Plenty of Grand Theft Auto parodies work by changing a name. This one works by copying a marketing tactic. Towed aerial banners are a genuinely Miami way of advertising a club, and building the parody around the delivery method rather than just the logo is what made the gag land locally as well as with players34. It is also why the real venue could answer in kind: Rockstar had handed it the format45.
Rockstar's history of parodying real businesses
NINE1NINE fits a pattern the series has run for decades. Grand Theft Auto's fictional universe is full of brands built directly off real ones: Cluckin' Bell as a stand-in for KFC, Sprunk mirroring Sprite, and a long list of similar swaps across food, drink, and retail that let Rockstar poke at real companies without using their names10. NINE1NINE is a rarer version of the same joke, aimed at a single real venue's specific marketing tactic rather than an entire product category310.
What the community thinks
Fan wikis and trailer-breakdown communities have tracked NINE1NINE since Trailer 1 and treat it as one of the series' clearest real-world parodies, given how precisely the name, the banner slogan, and the aerial delivery method all map onto E11EVEN3. The open question community discussion keeps returning to is whether the Downtown club shown in Trailer 2 will be a venue players can actually walk into during free roam, or a location tied specifically to a mission or cutscene, since Rockstar has shown the interior but not explained how players reach it3.
Fact vs. theory on this detail
- Confirmed: the NINE1NINE banner and slogan appear in Trailer 1, and the club interior appears in Trailer 212.
- Confirmed: E11EVEN Miami exists, opened in 2014, and regularly flies its own banner ads over Miami Beach69.
- Confirmed: E11EVEN flew a real reply banner on December 19, 202346.
- Theory: whether NINE1NINE is a free-roam enterable venue, a mission-only location, or both3.
What would confirm or bust it
Gameplay footage, a map leak from an official Rockstar source, or a strategy guide showing NINE1NINE as a clickable, enterable building on the free-roam map would confirm it as a normal open-world location rather than a scripted set piece. A mission list or walkthrough that only ever shows the club during a specific story beat would confirm the opposite3.
Either way, the parody itself is not really in question anymore. Between the matching name, the matching slogan format, the matching aerial delivery method, and a real business publicly answering the joke with its own plane, this is one of the small number of Grand Theft Auto VI details that has already been effectively confirmed by the outside world rather than by Rockstar3456.
Frequently asked questions
What is NINE1NINE in GTA 6?
A Vice City nightclub that parodies the real E11EVEN Miami, first advertised via a plane banner in Trailer 1 and shown from the inside in Trailer 2123.
Did E11EVEN react to GTA 6?
Yes. The club flew its own banner over Miami Beach reading "WHEN NINE 1 NINE = E11EVEN" in December 202345.
When did E11EVEN Miami open?
