Buckingham Maverick in GTA 6: the helicopter over Mount Kalaga

The Buckingham Maverick helicopter is confirmed for GTA 6 through official imagery. Bell 206 roots, its long series history and unanswered questions

Updated September 3, 2026 · 4 min read · 9 sources

The Maverick is the default civilian helicopter of Grand Theft Auto, and GTABase confirms it for GTA 6 on the strength of official screenshots, specifically imagery of Mount Kalaga National Park1. Charlie INTEL also listed a Maverick among the aircraft spotted when the first trailer landed2. Its confirmation route is worth noting: a still screenshot is a far stronger identification than a single frame of moving trailer footage, which is how most of the car list was assembled1.

Real-world inspiration

GTABase names the Bell 206L LongRanger, the stretched version of the ubiquitous Bell 206 JetRanger1. It is the helicopter you see doing traffic reporting, sightseeing tours and news work, which is exactly the role the Maverick fills in the games1.

Bell built the first 206L prototype in 1974 by stretching the cabin of the smaller JetRanger by 30 inches and lengthening the tail boom and rotor blades, and the LongRanger has stayed in production in one form or another ever since, with more than 1,700 built7. Its niche in the real world lines up closely with the Maverick's in-game role: charter flights, corporate transport, forestry work, film and television production, and law enforcement duties, the exact civilian-plus-police spread the series has always given the model7.

Series history

GTABase traces the Maverick through Vice City, San Andreas, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, GTA IV and GTA V, which makes it one of the longest-serving aircraft in the franchise1. Buckingham is the series' aviation badge, also responsible for the Swift, the SuperVolito and the Police Maverick13. Game Rant lists a Buckingham Police Maverick among the GTA 6 emergency vehicles identified so far3. Community lists also carry a Sea Sparrow amphibious helicopter for GTA 6, which would give the game two very different rotorcraft for a state built around water3.

GTA Wiki describes Buckingham as a fictional aviation manufacturer pulling from several real aerospace names at once, chiefly Bell and Bombardier with touches of Airbus and Rolls-Royce, fitting for a brand that has to cover everything from a modest civilian helicopter to luxury models like the Swift and SuperVolito5. That range means the Maverick sits at the affordable end of Buckingham's lineup rather than being the brand's flagship, a positioning GTA V and GTA Online kept consistent across its various liveries5.

Where you would use it

Rockstar's own site frames Leonida as a state rather than a single city, with distinct regions well apart from Vice City4. A slow, cheap, easy-to-fly helicopter is the tool for crossing that kind of map early in a game, before faster aircraft become available1.

What we do not know

  • Whether the Maverick appears in either trailer, as opposed to screenshots1
  • Whether the police and news variants both return3
  • Price, stats and flight model. Rockstar has published nothing1
  • Where helicopters can be bought or stored in Leonida4
  • Whether the Mount Kalaga screenshot shows a base Maverick, a Police Maverick in press livery, or a distinct Weazel News variant6
  • Whether the Sea Sparrow and Maverick are both flyable from the start or unlocked separately38

Where it appears, scene by scene

The Mount Kalaga screenshot is more specific than a plain civilian Maverick sighting. Community trackers cataloguing it describe a helicopter carrying a film crew over the park in a red, white and black Weazel News livery, and note that its body shape actually matches the Police Maverick variant rather than the base civilian model GTABase uses for its confirmation26. That is not a contradiction so much as a reminder that Rockstar has historically reused the Maverick's core airframe across civilian, police and news liveries, and a single screenshot cannot settle which specific variant Mount Kalaga's news chopper is standing in for16.

Neither trailer has produced a clean, named Maverick sighting the way the Mount Kalaga stills did. Charlie INTEL's trailer breakdown places a helicopter among the aircraft spotted when Trailer 1 landed, but stops short of confirming which model, and Rockstar's August 27, 2026 Extended Look presentation did not single out any Buckingham aircraft by name while covering the game's vehicle range29.

What earlier GTA games did with the Maverick

GTA V and GTA Online treat the Maverick as the entry point into helicopter flight: cheap relative to other rotorcraft, forgiving to fly, and available early, with the Police Maverick and a Weazel News-liveried version reusing the same airframe for law enforcement and media missions. That structure, one common helicopter shell wearing several liveries rather than three separate models, is exactly what the Mount Kalaga screenshot debate is arguing about for GTA 616.

What we expect in GTA 6

Rockstar has said comparatively little about flight specifically, but the broader vehicle-handling commentary around the Extended Look, built with input from professional racing drivers and pitched as heavier and less arcade-like than GTA V, gives a general direction rather than a confirmed one; nothing published so far addresses helicopters directly9. Community lists also carry a Sea Sparrow amphibious helicopter based on a Bell and Hughes-style light airframe, which would give GTA 6 two very different rotorcraft archetypes, a slow civilian workhorse in the Maverick and a small amphibious utility helicopter in the Sea Sparrow, covering both a huge state map and its extensive coastline38.

Community theories

The main live debate is the Weazel News liveried helicopter at Mount Kalaga: is it evidence of a standard Maverick, a Police Maverick reused for the press, or a separate news-branded variant the way earlier games have shipped? GTA Wiki's own cataloguing keeps that helicopter as a distinct, unnamed entry rather than folding it into either the Maverick or Police Maverick pages, which signals the identification is still open even among dedicated trackers6.

Not yet confirmed: helicopter handling. GTA 6's flight model has not been described by Rockstar in any published material.

Frequently asked questions

Are there helicopters in GTA 6?

Yes. The Buckingham Maverick has been confirmed from official screenshots, including Mount Kalaga National Park imagery, and a police variant has been identified too13.

What real helicopter is the Maverick?

It is based on the Bell 206L LongRanger1.

Is the Mount Kalaga helicopter definitely a Buckingham Maverick?

It's confirmed as a Buckingham-family helicopter, but community trackers note the Mount Kalaga screenshot actually shows a Weazel News liveried helicopter shaped like the Police Maverick variant, not the plain civilian model26.

What other helicopters are expected in GTA 6?

Community lists also include a Sea Sparrow, a smaller amphibious helicopter based on Bell/Hughes light airframes, though nothing about either aircraft is officially confirmed by Rockstar38.

What is the Maverick based on in real life?

The Bell 206L LongRanger, a stretched version of the Bell JetRanger used for charter flights, corporate transport, forestry work and law enforcement since the 1970s17.
