Mammoth Dodo in GTA 6: the seaplane spotted in Trailer 1

The Dodo is the oldest running joke in the Grand Theft Auto vehicle roster, and it makes it into GTA 6. GTABase confirms it from the first trailer, Charlie INTEL listed it among the aircraft spotted in that footage, and Game Rant carries it in its returning aircraft list alongside the Sea Sparrow and the Shamal¹²³⁴.

Real-world inspiration

GTABase identifies the GTA 6 Dodo as a De Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver, the classic bush plane that spends most of its working life on floats². That is a change of character for the nameplate: earlier Dodos were clipped-wing oddities that barely flew, and the in-game description still leans on that reputation².

The DHC-2 Beaver first flew in August 1947 out of Downsview, Ontario, built after de Havilland Canada surveyed bush pilots on what a rugged utility aircraft needed: short-field performance, all-metal construction and the ability to swap between wheels, skis and floats. The company leaned on a 1946 pilot questionnaire and consulted First World War flying ace turned bush pilot Punch Dickins during development⁷. Only around 1,600 were built before production ended in 1967, yet it is still widely regarded as the best bush plane ever made, and many are still flying seaplane routes across Canada and Alaska today, which is exactly the role a coastal, wetland-heavy Leonida would give a float-equipped GTA aircraft⁷.

Series history

GTABase traces the Dodo through GTA III, San Andreas and GTA V². In GTA III it was famously almost unflyable, wings clipped so players could not leave the map, and the name has carried that association ever since. By GTA V it had become a genuine amphibious aircraft, and the GTA 6 version continues that direction².

The clipped-wing GTA III Dodo was not a joke born from creative choice. Coverage of the original game's development explains that the PS2's draw-distance limits made a normal fixed-wing plane impossible to render safely, so Rockstar cut the wingspan down until the aircraft became something players could barely keep airborne, and the in-game story leaned into that by having the plane impounded and stripped by federal agents⁵. GTA V dropped the joke almost entirely, giving the Dodo full-length wings and float capability, and GTABase's read on the GTA 6 version continues that more competent direction while keeping the self-deprecating in-game description as a nod to the original²⁵. Rockstar's August 27, 2026 Extended Look presentation covered planes and helicopters as vehicle classes in broad terms while showcasing customisation and other gameplay systems, but outlets covering the stream did not call out the Dodo by name, so its status beyond the first trailer is unconfirmed⁸.

Brand history: what else Mammoth builds

GTA Wiki describes Mammoth as the series' analogue for AM General and Hummer, a name meant to poke fun at the sheer bulk of Hummer-badged vehicles, and notes the brand also holds defense contracts inside the fiction alongside Buckingham and Western Company⁶. Its aircraft catalogue outside the Dodo includes the Hydra hover jet, the Avenger tilt-rotor, the Tula amphibious flying boat and the Mogul twin-prop, which makes the Dodo the brand's smallest and least martial aircraft by a wide margin⁶.

What we expect in GTA 6
