Maibatsu Penumbra in GTA 6: the Eclipse-style compact from Trailer 2

The Maibatsu Penumbra returns in GTA 6 Trailer 2. Mitsubishi Eclipse and Audi TT inspiration, its GTA V history and what has not been confirmed

Updated September 3, 2026 · 4 min read · 9 sources

The Penumbra is the cheap performance coupe of the GTA world, the car you buy when you want something quick and cannot afford anything good. GTABase confirms it from the second GTA 6 trailer, and autoevolution picked it out of the same footage123.

Real-world inspiration

GTABase reads the Penumbra as a blend of the Mitsubishi Eclipse and the Audi TT, while autoevolution specifically names the fourth-generation Eclipse and notes additional Dodge Dart, Scion tC and Ford Fiesta cues in the detailing23. That mix is typical of Rockstar's approach: the silhouette comes from one car, the lights and bumpers from three others, and nothing is close enough to attract a lawyer23.

Series history

The Penumbra appeared in GTA V and GTA Online, where its in-game description leaned on the idea of a recently discontinued high-performance compact that drift fans would later collect2. Maibatsu is the series' Mitsubishi and Isuzu analogue, a badge that has been in the games since the PS2 era and also covers the Manchez and Sanchez off-road bikes2.

Where it fits in Leonida

GTA 6 traffic in Trailer 2 is noticeably more mixed than GTA V's, with more genuinely cheap cars alongside the supercars, and the Penumbra sits at the bottom of the sporty end of that spread13. It is the car for a player with no money in the first hour of the game rather than a trophy purchase1.

What we do not know

  • Whether the GTA 6 car is a redesign or a carry-over of the GTA V model2
  • Whether the Penumbra FF widebody variant from GTA Online returns2
  • Price, stats and handling. Rockstar has published nothing2
  • Whether drift tuning is a supported customisation category in GTA 62
Not yet confirmed: the identification rests on short trailer shots. Rockstar has never published a GTA 6 vehicle list.

Where it appears, scene by scene

Trailer trackers have refined the Penumbra's sighting since GTABase's original call. GTA Wiki places a silver example parked sideways near an intersection in Vice City's Crosstown district in Trailer 1, sitting directly in front of a purple Gauntlet Hellfire at around the 0:45 mark, with a second, pink Penumbra logged separately in Trailer 2 street footage4. Community breakdowns of the August 27, 2026 Extended Look, including a scene-by-scene Jalopnik rundown of dozens of cars from that 26-minute reveal, do not flag a Penumbra anywhere in it, so the car currently has no confirmed appearance beyond the two teaser trailers9.

The real car behind it

The donor car is the fourth-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse, which arrived for the 2005 model year built on a Mitsubishi Galant platform, an unusual foundation autoevolution notes for something sold as a sports coupe6. Mitsubishi dropped the previous generation's turbo four in favor of a naturally aspirated 165 hp 2.4-liter four and a 263 hp 3.8-liter MIVEC V6, added a convertible Spyder body in 2006, gave the range a final facelift in 2009, and discontinued the whole Eclipse line in 20126. That last date is doing real work in the Penumbra's GTA V description, which calls it "recently discontinued" and jokes that it will take a decade to become "ironic cool", a line that only tracks if Rockstar is winking directly at the Eclipse's real exit from the market2. The Audi TT influence GTABase and GTA Wiki both flag sits mostly at the back of the car, where the rounded glass and tail lights read as second-generation TT rather than anything Mitsubishi built24.

Brand history in the GTA series

Maibatsu's name fuses Daihatsu and Mitsubishi, and the badge has stood in for both since Grand Theft Auto IV, where it built the boxy Mule truck and the Sanchez dirt bike rather than anything sporty5. GTA V and GTA Online kept the Mule and Sanchez, added the Penumbra as the brand's first proper coupe, and gave Maibatsu a helicopter, the Frogger, plus later a dedicated off-road racer, the MonstroCiti, during the San Andreas Mercenaries update5. Against that catalogue the Penumbra has always been the outlier: Maibatsu's other GTA products are trucks, bikes and utility vehicles, so a drift-oriented coupe is the one car in the lineup built purely to be fun rather than functional5.

What we expect in GTA 6

Rockstar has described a car theft system built around tiers rather than a single button press. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has said the old approach of pressing triangle to auto-hotwire "left a lot of potential gameplay on the table", and outlets covering the Extended Look describe older, worn vehicles as easy targets while pristine sports cars demand tools like a key cloner or the in-game WAINK scanner app before a theft even starts78. A budget performance coupe like the Penumbra, sold in-game as a used car for drift enthusiasts, reads like exactly the kind of vehicle that sits on the easy end of that new spectrum rather than needing a cloned key or triggering a GPS-tracker chase, though Rockstar has not said so directly and this is inference from the system's stated design goals, not a confirmed detail about this specific car78.

Community theories

Two questions dominate community discussion of the car. The first is whether GTA 6 carries over the widebody Penumbra FF variant that GTA Online added as a standalone drift-focused trim, since Rockstar has shown only the standard silhouette so far2. The second is classification: GTABase currently files the car simply as a sports compact, but some trailer trackers argue Rockstar's broader GTA 6 class list could split it into its own drift or tuner category given how much attention the Extended Look paid to street-racing culture elsewhere in the game2. Both remain speculation pending an official vehicle list.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Penumbra in GTA 6?

Community trackers identify it in Trailer 2 and list it as a confirmed GTA 6 vehicle, based on the second trailer23.

What real car is the Maibatsu Penumbra?

It is mainly a fourth-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse, with Audi TT and other compact-coupe details mixed in23.

What Mitsubishi is the Maibatsu Penumbra based on?

Community trackers and autoevolution both point to the fourth-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse (2005-2012), built on a Mitsubishi Galant platform, with Audi TT styling worked into the rear end246.

Does the Penumbra appear in the GTA 6 Extended Look?

Not that anyone has spotted. Scene-by-scene breakdowns of the August 27, 2026 Extended Look, including a detailed Jalopnik rundown, do not list a Penumbra among the cars shown9.

Will the Penumbra be hard to steal in GTA 6?

Unknown, but Rockstar's new tiered theft system reportedly makes older, cheaper cars easier targets than pristine sports cars, which fits a budget drift coupe like the Penumbra, though this is inference rather than a confirmed detail78.
