Can you play as a woman in GTA 6? Yes, and it is a series first

Lucia Caminos is a full playable protagonist, not an option or an avatar. Here is why that has never happened in a mainline GTA before.

Yes. Lucia Caminos is one of Grand Theft Auto VI's two playable protagonists, with her own biography, her own dialogue and her own half of the story. She is not a character creator option or an alternate skin1.

Why this is a first

The series has had playable women before, but never like this. The original Grand Theft Auto in 1997 and the Game Boy Color version of Grand Theft Auto 2 in 2000 both let you pick a female avatar, but those characters had no unique dialogue and no separate story. Grand Theft Auto Online, from 2013, lets you build a female character, but that character never speaks4.

Lucia is the first female protagonist in the series who is written, voiced and mandatory. You do not choose her; she is half the game14.

Who Lucia is

Rockstar's own profile says her father taught her to fight almost as soon as she could walk, that defending her family is what put her in Leonida Penitentiary, and that luck rather than a legal process got her out. Her ambition is the comfortable life her mother has wanted since their time in Liberty City, and she intends to arrange it herself1.

She was also the first character Rockstar showed. Trailer 1 opens on her in a prison setting before it introduces anyone else2.

How much of the game is hers

Roughly half, based on what has been shown. The Extended Look demonstrates switching between Jason and Lucia in the open world and inside missions, and shows Lucia driving during a police chase, base jumping from a Vice City tower and fighting at close quarters using contextual prompts3.

Previews describe distinct fighting styles for the two, with Lucia able to train in kickboxing and mixed martial arts while Jason uses a rougher street style, and separate customisation for her clothing, hair, nails and tattoos3.

What is not confirmed

Rockstar has not said whether the two protagonists get equal mission counts, whether either can be played exclusively, or who voices Lucia1. The character has never been described as a choice, so there is no evidence you can skip her.

Why it took the series this long

Grand Theft Auto's mainline games have historically been built around a single written protagonist, and every one of those from Grand Theft Auto III onward was male. The exceptions were avatar-based: the top-down originals let you pick a character portrait, and Grand Theft Auto Online lets you build a silent character of either gender4. None of those choices carried a written role4.

GTA VI does not offer a choice at all, which is the point. Lucia is not an option you select at the start; she is one half of a two-hander, with her own history, her own motivation and her own scenes1.

How Rockstar has framed her

Rockstar's official profile leans on capability rather than novelty. It describes a woman taught to fight from childhood, imprisoned for defending her family, out on luck, and unwilling to wait for the life she wants1. Trailer 1 opened on her, and Rockstar's cover art places her alongside Jason rather than behind him12.

The Extended Look backs that up in gameplay terms, with Lucia driving during pursuits, base jumping, and handling her own shootouts and close-quarters fights3.

Confirmed down to her own gun

The clearest sign Lucia is written as a full, symmetrical protagonist rather than a secondary character is in the smallest detail Rockstar has confirmed: her own weapon. The Ultimate Edition's personalised sidearms are described as "detailed engravings for Jason's Girardi ES9 pistol and Lucia's Klose K17 pistol," two different guns from two different in-world manufacturers, each treated as belonging to its character individually rather than as a shared item reskinned for whoever is on screen5. Jason's safehouse vehicles are listed separately too, an Army-fatigue-tinged Dinka Enduro motorcycle and a Crest Kayak, which by omission confirms Lucia gets her own separate loadout of customisation rather than sharing Jason's5.

Why this level of separation matters

A shared inventory would have been the cheaper design choice, and Rockstar did not take it. Giving each protagonist a distinct signature pistol, distinct vehicles and, per the character profiles, distinct backstory and dialogue is a lot of duplicated production work for a studio that could have built one wardrobe and one arsenal and let players pick a skin. That production choice is itself evidence for how seriously Rockstar is treating Lucia as an equal lead rather than an optional second character5.

The gap this closes from the very last game

The comparison that lands hardest is not the 1997 original, it is the most recent one. Grand Theft Auto V's three protagonists, Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips, were all men, and the game's much-expanded companion service, GTA Online, is where a female character became possible at all, as a silent, player-built avatar rather than a written role6. That means the immediately preceding mainline entry offered nothing closer to Lucia than an online character creator screen. GTA VI is not a slow evolution from GTA V's cast; it is a direct jump.

What would make this claim wrong

For the record, here is what would overturn this page. If a future Rockstar statement revealed a hidden mode letting players complete the entire story as Jason alone, that would reintroduce the idea of Lucia as optional, even if unlikely given how much of the confirmed content, her own weapon, her own vehicles, her own dialogue, argues against it. Nothing published so far suggests that, and until it does, the answer stands: yes, and not as a choice15.

Read the two pieces of evidence together, the writing and the merchandise, and the picture holds up from every angle we can currently check. Rockstar wrote her as a co-lead, gave her a matching arsenal, and has never once described her as optional. That is about as close to a settled answer as anything on this site gets before launch.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play as a woman in GTA 6?

Yes. Lucia Caminos is one of two playable protagonists and is not optional1.

Is Lucia the first female GTA protagonist?

She is the first non-optional one. Earlier games offered silent female avatars without their own dialogue or story4.

Can you play the whole game as Lucia?

Not confirmed. Rockstar has shown free switching between both characters but has not said whether one can be avoided entirely3.

Does Lucia play differently from Jason?

Previews describe different hand-to-hand styles, with Lucia trained in kickboxing and MMA and Jason using a street-fighting style3.

Who voices Lucia?

Unannounced. Rockstar has not credited any actor in GTA VI1.

Does Lucia have her own signature weapon?

Yes. Rockstar's Ultimate Edition describes a personalised Klose K17 pistol for Lucia, distinct from Jason's Girardi ES95.

Do Jason and Lucia share the same customisation options?

No, based on confirmed edition content. Jason has his own listed vehicles and weapon variant, and Lucia has her own, rather than a shared pool5.
