GTA 6 map secret: the Gloriana license plates hiding a second state

Most cars in the trailers carry Leonida plates, but Gloriana and Liberty City plates also appear, hinting at a wider map or wider world

Updated September 3, 2026 · 5 min read · 6 sources

Almost every vehicle in the Grand Theft Auto VI trailers carries a Leonida plate, which is what you would expect from a game set in that state. A handful do not. Plates reading Gloriana turn up on traffic in both Trailer 2 and the later Extended Look footage, and Liberty City plates have been spotted too123.

Rockstar has named a second state before

Grand Theft Auto has done this exact trick twice already, which is why the Gloriana plate reading is taken seriously instead of dismissed outright. Grand Theft Auto IV built the fictional state of Alderney out of New Jersey and put it directly across a bridge from Liberty City, its version of New York, so a second, smaller state neighboring the main one already has a precedent in the series6. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas went further still, blending pieces of California and Nevada into a single fictional state that held three cities at once, Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas, which shows Rockstar is comfortable folding more than one real place into one piece of fictional geography when it serves the story5. Neither precedent proves Gloriana is real. What they show is that a plate reading like this lands on ground Rockstar has walked before, rather than being a total departure from how the studio has built its map states in the past56.

What Gloriana is thought to be

The consensus reading is that Gloriana is Grand Theft Auto's Georgia, the state bordering Florida to the north24. Supporters of that reading point at Mount Kalaga National Park, whose canyon scenery resembles Georgia's Providence Canyon more than anything in Florida, and argue the park may sit outside Leonida entirely2.

What is actually visible on screen

To be precise about what counts as confirmed here: the plates themselves are legible, rectangular, and follow the same font and layout convention as the Leonida plates seen on the large majority of traffic, they just swap the state name printed along the bottom edge13. They turn up on background vehicles in wide street shots rather than on any car driven by Jason or Lucia, which matters because it means nobody has shown a Gloriana plate on a vehicle tied to the story so far1. The Liberty City plates spotted in the same stretches of footage follow the same pattern, appearing on parked or passing traffic rather than anything plot relevant3. That placement is exactly what you would expect from background art department work, dressing a street with variety, and it is also exactly what you would expect if a detail was planted on purpose for players to notice later. The footage alone cannot settle which explanation is correct123.

The far more boring possibility

TheGamer, which ran the story, is careful about this and so are we: out-of-state plates are exactly what a well-observed American road looks like, and Rockstar has been putting foreign plates on background traffic for years2. Liberty City plates appearing in the same footage is a strong argument for set dressing, because nobody seriously expects Liberty City to be drivable in Grand Theft Auto VI23.

What the community has done with it

The find began with the account GTA6Intel flagging the plate on social media, and TheGamer's write-up is the piece that carried it into the wider press cycle2. From there it slotted into an older, larger community argument about how big Leonida really is and whether Rockstar is holding a second region back for a future update, an argument that predates this specific plate and has run across Reddit's GTA 6 community and multiple YouTube trailer-breakdown channels since Trailer 123. Community threads on this topic tend to split into the same two camps every time: one side treats every out-of-state detail as a breadcrumb toward a bigger map, the other points out that American roads are full of out-of-state traffic and that a studio obsessed with realism would put some in without meaning anything by it2. Both camps are working from the same handful of frames, which is the core limitation of this kind of theory-building before the game is actually out and explorable123.

Where this stands

The plates are plainly visible in official footage, so this page is marked verified for the observation itself13. Every conclusion drawn from them, including that Gloriana is Georgia, that Mount Kalaga sits inside it, or that any part of it is playable, is speculation with no Rockstar statement behind it24. Rockstar's official site describes the game as set across the state of Leonida and mentions no second state2.

How to test a claim like this

The useful question is not whether a plate exists, it is whether anything else corroborates the place. For Leonida there is a whole state: signage, official site copy, regions and city names. For Gloriana there is a plate and an argument about canyon scenery. That asymmetry is the whole story, and it is why we mark the observation confirmed and the conclusion open234.

What would actually confirm or kill this

This gets settled by evidence, not by counting plates. It would be confirmed by any of: a Rockstar Newswire post naming Gloriana as a place rather than a plate, the official Rockstar site adding a region page or map area outside Leonida, a mission or radio ad that treats Gloriana as a destination, or simply the game shipping with a drivable road that crosses a state line on launch day2. It would be effectively killed by Rockstar's marketing continuing to describe the setting as Leonida alone all the way through release, which is exactly what the official site has done so far, with no second state named anywhere in its copy2. Until one of those happens, the honest description is that the plate is real and everything built on top of it is a reading of that plate, not a fact about the map1234.

Confirmed: Gloriana and Liberty City plates appear on traffic. Unconfirmed: that either place is on the map, playable, or relevant to the story.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gloriana in GTA 6?

Gloriana appears as a license plate on background traffic. Whether it is a visitable place is unconfirmed and may be set dressing2.

What state is Gloriana based on?

It is widely read as Georgia, based on the plate design and on Mount Kalaga's canyon scenery. Rockstar has not confirmed it24.

Has Rockstar built a second, smaller neighboring state before?

Yes. GTA IV paired Alderney, based on New Jersey, with Liberty City, and GTA San Andreas combined California and Nevada into one fictional state, so the idea has precedent even though Gloriana itself is unconfirmed56.

What would prove Gloriana is a real, drivable part of GTA 6?

A Rockstar Newswire post, an official site region page, or a playable road crossing a state line at launch. None of those exist yet, so it remains a theory built on a license plate2.
