Early in Trailer 2, Jason collects Lucia and she is wearing an electronic monitor on her ankle. Later in the same trailer, in scenes that clearly sit further along in the story, the monitor is gone¹².

The ankle monitor is not a Trailer 2 discovery. It was already visible in the key art Rockstar released alongside Trailer 1 on December 5, 2023, where Lucia sits on a car hood next to Jason with the device plainly on her leg⁶. Coverage at the time already floated the idea that she had just left custody, more than a year before Trailer 2 gave the detail any motion⁶.

A follow-up piece in February 2024 pushed the read further, arguing Rockstar could use the monitor as a soft boundary on the player's early movement, gradually opening the map as the story allows her more freedom⁷. What it tells you about Lucia

An ankle monitor is not decoration. It establishes, without a line of exposition, that Lucia is fresh out of custody and on supervised release, with conditions attached to where she can go and when²³. That is a lot of characterisation for a prop, and it lines up with the first trailer, which showed her in a prison context³.

Rockstar's character page for Lucia backs the trailer detail up directly. It describes her as having been raised by a father who "taught her to fight as soon as she could walk," says that fighting for her family "landed her in the Leonida Penitentiary," and that "sheer luck got her out"⁵. That is about as close as Rockstar gets to confirming the ankle monitor's premise without naming the prop itself. The bio does not use the words ankle monitor, parole, or supervised release, so the mechanism is still inferred from the trailer image rather than printed on the page, but the timeline the bio describes, freshly released and trying to stay smart, lines up exactly with what the monitor is doing visually⁵².

Why the monitor disappearing matters

Rockstar is using it as a timeline marker. Because the monitor is present in some shots and absent in others, the trailer is telling you which scenes are early and which are late, which is the only reliable chronology anybody has for Trailer 2's footage². Research from the National Institute of Justice describes them being used either as a deterrent that discourages violations by making movement visible to supervising officers, or as a stricter enforcement tool that flags breaches of a curfew or an exclusion zone in something close to real time⁸.

None of that is a description of anything in Grand Theft Auto VI. It is background on the object itself, useful for understanding why Rockstar reached for it as shorthand: a monitor like this typically comes with conditions attached to where a person can go and when, which is exactly the kind of constraint a story can use to explain why a character starts out boxed in⁸.

The theory is bust, or at least downgraded to pure flavour, if early gameplay footage shows Lucia moving freely across Leonida from the opening hours with no monitor-related prompt, warning, or restriction of any kind.
