GTA 6 easter egg: Tommy Vercetti's shirt on a wooden lizard in Trailer 2

This one sat in plain sight for over a year. At roughly 0:33 in Trailer 2, in the scene where Jason slaps a shop cashier, the wall on the left of frame carries a decorative wooden lizard, the kind sold in every coastal gift shop in Florida. It is wearing a small turquoise shirt printed with palm trees¹².

Who Tommy Vercetti was

Tommy Vercetti carries more weight in Grand Theft Auto history than a background lizard ornament would suggest. He was the series' first fully voiced protagonist, played by Ray Liotta in a performance that drew comparisons to his role as Henry Hill in Goodfellas and won voice-performance awards from outlets covering games in 2003⁴. The character was written as Vice City's answer to Tony Montana: a small-time enforcer for the Forelli family in Liberty City who is exiled south after a long prison stretch and ends up seizing the entire city's underworld for himself⁵. His signature look, a teal Hawaiian shirt printed with palm trees, paired with jeans, white sneakers, a pearl necklace and a gold watch, became so tied to that story that later Grand Theft Auto games and merchandise kept reusing the same silhouette to signal him without any dialogue⁴⁵. Why the shirt is the point

That print is Tommy Vercetti's. The turquoise palm-tree Hawaiian shirt is the outfit Grand Theft Auto: Vice City's protagonist is most associated with, to the extent that it functions as his silhouette². Putting it on a tourist ornament, in the background of a scene that has nothing to do with him, is a very precise joke: the 1986 gangster reduced to gift-shop decor².

Exactly where to find it

The shot sits inside a short montage of Jason's daily routine that opens the story portion of Trailer 2. He walks into a convenience store, hits the man behind the counter hard enough to knock him back, and empties the till while the cashier reels from the slap¹². The lizard hangs on the wall behind the register, roughly level with the top shelf of goods, and its shirt is readable for well under a second, only once the cashier's head snaps sideways and clears the sightline that had been blocking it². Pausing the trailer on that single frame, rather than scrubbing through it at normal speed, is the only way anyone has found it, which is why it took over a year to surface even with the trailer racking up tens of millions of views¹². Fans who rewatched the trailer specifically hunting for Vice City nods, the same audience that caught the Ocean View Hotel sign within a day of Trailer 1's release, still walked past this one for more than twelve months, which says something about how densely Rockstar layers its background art².

Who found it and when

It surfaced through Reddit user WorriedSheepherder42 and was written up in June 2026, more than a year after Trailer 2 released in May 2025². That gap is a useful measure of how much authored detail is sitting in these trailers still unexamined².

How it fits the pattern

It is not an isolated nod. Rockstar has repeatedly pointed at Vercetti without naming him: the Ocean View Hotel rebuilt in its old spot in Trailer 1, and an official screenshot showing Jason in a palm-print shirt standing near that same hotel³. None of this indicates Vercetti appears in the game, and no Rockstar material references him²³.

Nodding at retired protagonists without naming them is something Rockstar does across its whole catalogue, not just within Vice City's own sequels. The studio has planted Manhunt's Carcer City into Grand Theft Auto V's fictional news broadcasts, put Bully's Bullworth Academy into a Grand Theft Auto IV in-game advert, and engraved Bully's own school motto onto a pistol in Red Dead Redemption 2, a game set almost a century earlier in the fiction⁶. None of those references come with a cutscene or a callout; they reward only the players who already know what they are looking at, which is exactly the deal on offer with the lizard's shirt⁶.

The lesson for trailer hunting

This find is a good argument for going back to old footage. Trailer 2 was watched tens of millions of times within days of release, and a callback to the most recognisable outfit in Vice City still sat unnoticed on a wall for more than a year². The corollary is worth stating plainly: absence of a discovery is not evidence that nothing is there, and the trailers almost certainly still hold details nobody has written up¹².

What would turn this into something more

A background lizard is not evidence of a cameo appearance. What would change that reading is something concrete and checkable: Tommy Vercetti named in an official cast list, a mission or news broadcast that references him directly, or Rockstar reusing more of his likeness rather than just a piece of his wardrobe. Nothing like that exists yet, and the official Grand Theft Auto VI site has never mentioned him²³. It is also worth remembering that Ray Liotta, the actor who voiced Tommy, died in May 2022, which makes any literal in-story return of the character logistically unlikely even if Rockstar wanted one, and gives extra weight to the theory that this is purely a visual tribute rather than a setup for a role⁷. Until one of those things happens, the safest reading stays the same: Rockstar dressed a shop ornament in a dead man's shirt as a wink, not a promise.
