GTA 6 map secret: the Vice City Metro train hidden in Trailer 2

An automated blue and grey metro train runs on elevated track in Trailer 2 at 0:45, modelled closely on Miami-Dade’s real Metrorail system

Public transport is usually background furniture in Grand Theft Auto, which is why the elevated train in Trailer 2 is worth pausing on. Around 0:45, a blue and grey train runs on raised track above a road in the La Perle area of Vice City, marked on its flanks with the operator name Vice City Metro Mule, abbreviated VCMM12.

What it is based on

The rolling stock is modelled on the Hitachi Rail units that Miami-Dade's Metrorail runs, and the elevated alignment above a surface road matches how Metrorail actually threads through the city2. The most telling detail is what is missing: the unit appears to have no driver's cab, which matches an automated system in the style of Miami's people mover rather than a conventional driven metro2.

The real system is not small set dressing either. Miami-Dade's Metrorail opened in May 1984, running from Dadeland South up through Overtown on an elevated concrete guideway built specifically to clear the region's roads and waterways, and today the line covers roughly 36 kilometers across 22 stations4. Rockstar's VCMM livery borrows that scale of ambition: an elevated line threading over a public road reads as infrastructure a whole city relies on, not a decorative background loop dropped in for one shot4.

Two real systems blended into one train

Miami actually runs two different rail networks, and the Grand Theft Auto VI train reads like a splice of both. Metrorail is where the elevated guideway and Hitachi-style rolling stock come from, but the real line still carries an onboard operator who manages the doors and monitors an automated braking system rather than running fully driverless4. The system that is genuinely driverless is Metromover, a separate downtown loop that opened in April 1986 specifically to move people between office towers, hotels and Bayside Marketplace without any staff on board, later expanded with a second loop in 19945. The VCMM's missing driver's cab lines it up with Metromover's automation rather than Metrorail's, while its elevated route above a public road and its rolling stock match Metrorail, which suggests Rockstar folded two real systems into one fictional network rather than copying either exactly45.

Why it matters

Multiple breakdowns of Trailer 2 flagged trains and transit appearing in more than one shot, which is a reasonable signal that the network exists as a functioning part of the map rather than as a single set-dressed prop3. In practice, an elevated line running through a dense district also gives Rockstar vertical geometry to build chases and rooftop routes around, which is why it is worth tracking3.

Coverage of the reveal leaned on that same framing, with outlets describing the train as a detail that had gone unnoticed on first viewing despite Trailer 2 being picked apart shot by shot within hours of release7. That is consistent with how the fanbase has treated most of the trailer's background transit: worth flagging immediately, but read as one visible piece of a larger system rather than the whole of it7.

What is not confirmed

Whether players can ride it, whether stations are enterable, how far the network reaches, and whether it appears anywhere outside Vice City. None of that has been shown or stated by Rockstar, and the operator name itself comes from reading the livery in trailer frames rather than from an official source23.

Separately from the trailer footage, Rockstar has said fast travel in Grand Theft Auto VI will lean on public transport rather than a menu teleport, with buses stopping at marked points on the map alongside a ride-hailing style app for calling a car6. A train fits naturally into that kind of system, and its appearance in Trailer 2 lines up with reporting that the game is building a functioning transit network rather than treating stations as scenery67. None of that confirms the metro itself is rideable, but it does mean the idea fits the direction Rockstar has already described elsewhere6.

Rockstar's history with real transit

This is not the first time Rockstar has done its homework on a real transit network before fictionalising it. For Grand Theft Auto IV, the studio researched New York City's actual infrastructure, including its subway system, sewers and garbage disposal, before building Liberty City's own underground and elevated lines around that research8. The same field-research approach shaped Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto V, where the team used satellite mapping, census data and site visits to lay out Los Angeles-style roads before adding any fiction on top9. Treating the VCMM train as a close cousin of Miami-Dade's real Metrorail and Metromover systems fits that same working method: build the fiction on top of verified real-world engineering rather than an invented system with no anchor458.

What Miami’s system actually looks like

Miami runs two connected things: a heavy rail line on elevated concrete guideway, and a small automated downtown people mover. The Grand Theft Auto VI train borrows from both, taking the rolling stock and elevated alignment from the first and the driverless configuration from the second2. That blend is why the identification was quick and why it looks right to anyone who has been there23.

What would confirm this is a real, working network

The gap between a background train and a system players can actually use is wide, and closing it needs specific evidence rather than more trailer analysis. A Newswire post or map reveal naming additional stations, a mission that starts or ends at a platform, gameplay footage showing a character boarding, or an official transit map bundled with the game's website would each independently settle the question136. Until Rockstar shows one of those, the honest position is that Trailer 2 confirms the VCMM exists as scenery and strongly implies it exists as infrastructure, without confirming it exists as a mechanic the player can touch123.

Confirmed: an elevated metro train exists and runs in Vice City. Unconfirmed: that it is rideable, and the extent of the network.

Frequently asked questions

Does GTA 6 have a metro system?

An elevated metro train marked VCMM is visible in Trailer 2 at around 0:45. Whether it is rideable is unconfirmed12.

What is the GTA 6 train based on?

The Hitachi Rail units used on Miami-Dade Metrorail, including the driverless configuration2.

Is Miami's real train system automated?

Partly. Metrorail uses automatic train operation but keeps an onboard operator, while the separate downtown Metromover loop runs completely driverless, which is closer to what the VCMM train in Trailer 2 appears to do45.

Did Rockstar confirm a working transit system for GTA 6?

Rockstar has said fast travel will lean on public transport such as buses with marked stops, which supports the idea of a functioning network without confirming the train itself is rideable6.
