Rockstar's own video pages date Trailer 1 to 4 December 2023 with a running time of 1:31, and Trailer 2 to 6 May 2025 at 2:4712. Almost everything else about them is different too.

How they were released

Trailer 1 did not go out as planned. It had been scheduled for 5 December 2023, but a copy escaped online the day before and Rockstar published the real thing early rather than let the leak circulate3. It went up as a YouTube exclusive and pulled in roughly 93 million views in its first day3.

Trailer 2 went everywhere at once, on YouTube and on Rockstar's social accounts, and cleared more than 475 million views across platforms in 24 hours, which Rockstar described as the biggest video launch of all time4.

What each one was for

Trailer 1 is a place. It introduces Leonida through crowds, beaches, wildlife, police, phone footage and news clips, and gives you Lucia in a prison setting before it gives you anything else. Jason barely registers as a character13.

Trailer 2 is a cast. It puts Jason and Lucia together as a working pair, runs longer action sequences, and introduces the supporting characters Rockstar later profiled in full on its Only in Leonida page: Cal, Boobie, Dre'Quan, Real Dimez, Raul and Brian25.

The music

Trailer 1 is carried by Tom Petty's Love Is a Long Road. Trailer 2 uses The Pointer Sisters' 1986 track Hot Together, which starts around a minute in as Jason and Lucia reunite. Three more licensed tracks appear across the two: Child Support by Zenglen, Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang Chung, and Talkin' to Myself Again by Tammy Wynette6.

What actually changed in the game

Less than the comparison videos suggest. Both trailers are pre-rendered marketing cut from in-engine material, and Rockstar has not published technical notes for either, so any claim about lighting, draw distance or model quality improving between them is a viewer's judgement rather than a documented change12.

The verifiable difference is scope of subject matter: Trailer 2 shows more regions, more named characters and more of the story's structure, because by May 2025 Rockstar had more it was willing to show25.

Careful with side-by-side comparison videos. Two trailers cut for different purposes are not a like-for-like graphics test, and Rockstar has published no technical statement about either.

What Trailer 2 confirmed that Trailer 1 only implied

Trailer 1 established a state, a tone and a woman in a prison. Trailer 2 established a plot engine. It shows Jason and Lucia operating as a unit, introduces the people they work with and around, and gives the supporting cast enough screen time that Rockstar could follow up with full written profiles for each of them25.

It also broadened the geography. Where the first trailer was heavily weighted toward Vice City and its beaches, the second moves across more of Leonida, which is consistent with the six-region structure Rockstar later published25.

The release strategy tells its own story

The two rollouts were opposites. Trailer 1 went up early and alone on YouTube, forced out by a leak, and still pulled roughly 93 million views in a day3. Trailer 2 was a coordinated multi-platform drop that Rockstar promoted as the biggest video launch ever recorded, clearing 475 million views in the same window4.

That difference is worth remembering when people compare the two view counts as if they measured the same thing. One number is a single platform under emergency conditions; the other is every platform at once by design34.

The third video puts the first two in perspective

Neither trailer stands alone anymore. The Extended Look, released 27 August 2026 at 26 minutes 48 seconds, arrived roughly sixteen months after Trailer 2 and runs far longer than both trailers combined7. Looked at as a three-part rollout rather than two isolated videos, the pattern is a steady widening of scope: Trailer 1 sold a place in 91 seconds, Trailer 2 sold a cast in 167, and the Extended Look spent nearly 27 minutes selling systems, none of which the two trailers had room to demonstrate127.

What the preview reporting adds about the gap between them

Coverage of the August 2026 preview round notes that Rockstar's own senior staff had completed full playthroughs well before any of this went public, with reporting describing a roughly 80-hour solo playthrough by Rockstar North's co-studio head months ahead of the Extended Look8. That detail reframes the seventeen-month and sixteen-month gaps between videos: they were not empty periods for Rockstar internally, the finished game existed and was being played well before the public got even the third piece of marketing8.

What neither trailer could show, and the third video could

Trailers are cut for pace, not proof. Neither Trailer 1 nor Trailer 2 lingers long enough on any single system, driving, combat, the phone, to demonstrate how it actually works, which is exactly the gap the Extended Look and the preview round around it were built to close. Reporting on that round puts a concrete number on the underlying detail: more than 600,000 individual animations, against roughly 55,000 for GTA 58. That figure did not exist in either trailer's marketing and could not have been demonstrated in a sub-three-minute cut regardless of how good the footage looked, which is a fair explanation for why Rockstar waited until a 26-minute video to state it.

Reading the three releases as one campaign

Treated together rather than compared pairwise, the three videos read as a deliberate escalation rather than three independent marketing beats: place, then people, then systems. Each stage answered the question the previous one couldn't, and each arrived with a bigger number attached, more views, more characters, more animations, which is a marketing structure that only makes sense if it was planned as a sequence from early on rather than assembled reactively127.

That is useful context for anyone waiting on a fourth video. If the pattern holds, whatever comes next will answer a question the first three still leave open, most likely mission structure or an ending, rather than repeating footage of systems already demonstrated.
